Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

kateiacy,

I set my laptop to run at 70%, but sometimes it does get hot if I am running an application that also uses a lot of CPU. My solution is to just unplug the laptop for a few minutes to let it cool off.

Unplugging the laptop (and letting it run on battery) will usually force the system to reduce power to the CPU (mine reduce it down to about 1/3 performance). Strange this is you still get the runtime, so the beta will actually take longer to finish

This problem is specific to these betas. The two laptops run at reasonable temperatures when set to 60% CPU usage on lots of other WCG sciences. With these WUs, they go to 100% usage(as shown in "top") and the temperature goes too high.

I also couldn't get them to suspend. THey'd keep running unless I shut down BOINC.

These things happened on two different laptops, one running Ubuntu 10.04 and the other running Ubuntu 11.04. I've never had similar problems on either laptop.

I think we need to warn crunchers about this.

kateiacy,

My laptop is also running 100% of the time now due to the beta, but I don't think you understand. If you just unplug the power (and let it run of the battery) the system will cool done. BOINC will still use 100% of the CPU, but the CPU speed will just slow down (the bios reduces power to the CPU). Unplug it for 5 mins and you will see the difference in temperature.

My HP laptop is running 2 Betas @ 100% and my temps are 66 - 70 C.
I do have it elevated and it has a good fan.

Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

Not sure Beta's are really suited to laptops anyway,
If WUs have to run on laptops when in production it is necessary that laptops run beta WUs too.
Imagine that this very annoying problem of WUs not respecting the CPU throttle had not been discovered before moving to production and that a few laptops got damaged...

What is mandatory though is that members never run betas without keeping an eye on their machines, whether laptops or desktops.

Re: New Beta Starting 2011/07/22

JmBoullier,

I have to admit, if kateiacy didn't say anything, i wouldn't of noticed that the betas were running at 100% even with CPU throttle set to 70% and I have been setting in front of my laptop almost all day. I did notice it got a little warm, so I just unplugged the power cord for a few minutes. I also reduced it down to 60% thinking I was running too many apps that also needed the CPU to help keep it cool. kateiacy, just more observant then me I guess.

Murphy, did this happen to you on Windows, or are you also running Linux?

Also, I found that when I suspended a beta, not only did it not stop, but if I stopped and restarted BOINC, after a while the suspended task started running again. It still showed as suspended in BOINC manager, but "top" showed it running and consuming up to 100% of a core. :(

@kateiacy -- It was Windows Vista Home Premium (32).

I just tried to suspend WU on my XP and it works correctly; however, just one WU running, the other already finished and returned.
