knreed posts on CEP2 problem:
----------------------------------------The .157 address is more reliable than the .147 address. We have removed the .147 address from the round-robin DNS entries. The timeout on the DNS entry is 2 hours so from now to 4-6 hours from now the setting should be largely changed throughout the internet. This should reduce issues with client uploads. I'm sure that makes sense to some people! ![]() |

Good evening all,
----------------------------------------My mid-day results are looking good: 05/07/2013 0:039:14:27:12 164,818 233 Unfortunately my performance will start to drop due to my idle only machines being in use.

Just browsing the CEP problem thread and found the following: All this probably has something to do the the SETI Germany sponsored pentathlon going on right now [Team Challenge]. One of the projects in the contest is CEP2. Many of the teams use the "bunkering" technique (involves downloading and crunching tasks before the contest actually starts and then blocking the uploads until the contest does start, thus overwhelming the servers) which is probably what's causing the upload problems on the CEP2 servers. I never pay much (any) attention to Team Challenges although I know crooks_uk enters the UK team in any and all of them. But seriously "bunkering"?? And "bunkering" is nothing to do with the CEP problem btw. I can't believe that anyone in the community would stoop so low. If so, they should be ashamed of themselves. I enter the team challenges with the intention of increasing our exposure to potential new members by showcasing our crunching power. I have never, and never will, consider cheating to win.

Very true, and sad to hear about. @ fosking Last Result Returned (UTC) 6/5/13 00:19:24 [44+ hour(s) ago] I had noticed recently that I had been catching him/her in points so no results in two days would explain how I am. |

knreed posts on CEP2 problem: The .157 address is more reliable than the .147 address. We have removed the .147 address from the round-robin DNS entries. The timeout on the DNS entry is 2 hours so from now to 4-6 hours from now the setting should be largely changed throughout the internet. This should reduce issues with client uploads. I'm sure that makes sense to some people! ![]() A "round-robin DNS entry" basically means there's more than one IP address that a fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) points at, ie. www.worldcommunitygrid.org might point to 1.2.3.4 and 5.6.7.8, for reliability purposes (two servers are more resilient - one can go down and the website will still work, of sorts). Any queries made against www.worldcommunitygrid.org will cycle between the two (or more, in some cases) IP addresses when asked to resolve against www.worldcommunitygrid.org - so, if there are two entries, one server going down will result in 50% reliability (as opposed to 0% in the case of just having one server). When you try to browse to a website, or send an email, or do anything that involves internet-connectivity, your computer will query your ISP's DNS servers to convert that request from the form "www.worldcommunitygrid.org" into an IP address. What your ISP's DNS server then does is find out what the authoritative DNS servers are for that domain-name (ie. who controls it). If the DNS-entry your ISP servers have is more recent than the setting on the authoritative DNS server says it can be (referred to as the time-to-live, or TTL), then it will give you that DNS-entry and your request is fulfilled. If your ISP server's DNS entry is older than the authoritative server says it can be, then it will update itself with a new entry from the authoritative server (which can be the same IP address it already has) and resets the timer on its local record. All of this happens in milliseconds, so you won't notice too much of it happening, but there's a lot going on in the background when you press return to browse to this website, or send an email, etc! So, what knreed is saying is that they've updated the TTL to 2 hours (meaning all other DNS servers around the world will only keep a record for the CEP2 upload-server for 2 hours before expiring it), and they've removed the .147 address from the list of IP addresses that any queries will return when you try to upload a finished WU. As a result, when you go to upload a CEP2 WU from a maximum of 6 hours from now (you generally multiply the TTL by 2-3 to ensure worldwide coverage), it should only return the .157 address and hence be 100% reliable. Hopefully that helps clarify what knreed posted a little bit... ![]() |

@ Thargor
----------------------------------------Thanks for the explanation of knreed's post - crystal clear now. ![]() @ Maugan I noticed fosking lurking in the thread when I made the post which I thought was strange when WCG has logged no activity. In other news: Some members will call recall HCC temporarily ran short of work a few months ago causing much weeping & wailing and predictions that armageddon was upon us. The imminent end of HCC is having the same effect: My results returned are following the same strange pattern as total results returned. 5 days ago I had a big spike in results. I got 294 when I usually get around 200. I than got 2 days of around 175 followed by 106 yesterday and only 55 for this morning. The same thing is happening with total results returned as there was a big spike 5 days ago and yesterday was poor. I would think that someone at WCG would see this pattern and would give the members a reason for it. We are investing both money and effort in this project and we deserve answers when there is an obvious problem. and As an extremely active member of HCC, it's time for me to vent. After years of working on HCC, it seems HCC is shutting down. While I am happy that HCC seemed to have reached their mission, HCC didn't even have the common decency to send out an email 30-60 days prior stating so...or stating in LAYMEN'S terms, how the HCC worked, what's next, and when. Instead, I wake up to find numerous machines with nothing to do and entries in the Messages area of BOINC that there are no more work units. After visiting the HCC News area of the website, I'm littered with garbledy gook phrases and sentences that only people with a PhD in Biology can understand. I'm also told that "at a later date" a new project will come about to continue to find a cure. When the heck is "at a later date"?! 2014? 2018?! Seriously! I'm mad. Really mad! Why do projects like HCC treat their volunteers this way?! They (such as Christina in another thread) post very quick and bland messages every few months on the forum, give us laymen-folk 0 information on the progress, and then just shut down after receiving millions of dollars' worth of computing power. It adds up to nothing more than a "Thanks! Cya!" I want to find a cure for cancer. But the way HCC handled their shutdown/next wave of research is exactly the biggest reason why WCG only has a few hundred thousand active computers after almost 10 years of existence. Think about it...850 million users on Facebook in only a few years, yet WCG can't even get .01% of Facebook's volume...and I would argue that EVERYONE wants to find a cure for cancer. are just 2 examples. Should we laugh or cry ![]() ![]() |
