Re: Morning Update

Good afternoon all,

I predict that we will have a couple of good days runtime once the validators catch up with me. Still no change at 44 pages, but now only 6 of these are HCC, with the rest being tasks with longer runtimes.

I managed to pass 45 million points for HCC:

Help Conquer Cancer
45,034,715 (Points)
145,981 (Results)
32:130:11:32:16 (Runtime)

Re: Monthly Stats

Good evening all,

I have just done some light reading and have discovered why there hasn't been a rapid increase in my stats over the weekend. As I have changed my resources to HPF, there is a large amount of copies sent for each workunit (Minimum Quorum: 15), so I will be waiting a while for at least 14 wingmen to return their copies to be validated. The results should start to filter through as the week progresses.

I am a little disappointed as I was hoping to post a new runtime record with the addition of my new hex core (12 thread workstation) and with it being a extended weekend due to the bank holiday.

Time on My Hands!

Not a lot to do today so I've been preparing a 2-part magnum opus. Part 1 (to be posted shortly) will require reading glasses, a magnifying glass or use of the browser zoom function! It seeks to address Maugan's comment:
I'm especially interested to see what sort of average drop off in results and points different teams have due to the ending of HCC, I'm not sure if that's something you could show in the coming weeks? I hope the teams we recently passed have more dependancy on GPU usage than we do so they don't start all overtaking us back.

Part 2 looks at what the UK team (and the rest of the world) are doing with crunching time as HCC draws to a close.

And I've just noticed an outstanding request from crooks_uk :
Do you have the stats for the projects in terms of points per hour of runtime for the last 60 days? Thinking of optimising the fleet to gain as many points possible without HCC to increase my points ranking, which is my lowest of the three metrics. I want to ensure that I stay in the top 1000 rankings for all three
so that will probably be resolved tomorrow. wink

Re: Time on My Hands!

Should have kept my mouth shut! Found a major flaw when proofing the spreadsheet. Fairly easy to correct but the knock-on effect into the formatting for publication is horrendous. So there will be a delay!

In Other News

Just browsing the CEP problem thread and found the following:
All this probably has something to do the the SETI Germany sponsored pentathlon going on right now [Team Challenge]. One of the projects in the contest is CEP2. Many of the teams use the "bunkering" technique (involves downloading and crunching tasks before the contest actually starts and then blocking the uploads until the contest does start, thus overwhelming the servers) which is probably what's causing the upload problems on the CEP2 servers.

I never pay much (any) attention to Team Challenges although I know crooks_uk enters the UK team in any and all of them. But seriously "bunkering"??

And "bunkering" is nothing to do with the CEP problem btw.

Re: Time on My Hands!

So, back in LA at work and I found that one of the 4core machines i was borrowing hadn't been running WCG for the last 4 days so I've missed out on a fair bit of cpu/gpu running due to it (40-50%) of total. This is now up and running so my cpu work should be back up to its 4days/day RT again. I had been wondering why the RT data had been lower than i was expecting but totally missed it had stopped working but nothing i could have done about it being 5,000 miles away smile

@jonnieb-uk Thanks for all the stat work for the last set of monthly reports. And thanks for looking in to the little question I posed.

I dont want to steel your thunder jonnieb-uk, but for crooks_uk I have used this to work out my most efficient way to spend time on points. And its only using the five projects I'm currently active on with HCC as a comparison for figures, but that project will be distorted via me using a mixture of AMD and nvidia and CPU WUs.

_________________________________Points____results__time___________Total hours__PPR_____PPH_____HPR
Say No to Schistosoma______________106,274__ 135____0:017:11:05:47__419________787.2____253.6___3.1
GO Fight Against Malaria_____________235,290__ 332____0:038:10:33:14__922________708.7____255.1___2.8
Drug Search for Leishmaniasis________285,512__ 383____0:047:10:08:08__1138_______745.4____250.8___3
The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2____136,387__ 106____0:019:05:35:06__461________1286.6___295.8___4.3
Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2____ 270,356__ 369____0:055:16:34:51__1336_______732.6____202.3___3.6
Help Conquer Cancer_______________8,638,545_21,172__1:272:18:42:37__15306______408______564.4___0.7

I don't know how this will change if you look at WCG as a whole or specifically at different people. But for me to get points i would need to do The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2, and to maximize results GO Fight Against Malaria. Both of these are tiny numbers when compared to HCC which was better than all other projects. And it also shows that for purely ranking purposes the Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 is the worst project for me to do.

PPR - points per result
PPH - points per hour
HPR - hours per result

Which project to crunch next

Surely the only way to decide which project will get you the most points per hour (or whichever is your preferred statistic) is to actually try them all on your own machine(s). I've found that different machine (and OS) architectures produce different results (presumably due to different optimisations in the code), so just looking at the overall numbers doesn't really help me to decide what to do.

YMMV.
