Re: UK

Jeepers that wind was cold today. Not looking forward to the cycle to work in the morning, brrrrrr.
Ah, a fellow cycling commuter. How far do you have to travel? Are you urban or cross-country?

It is only a short journey, usually takes around 15 to 20 mins at a gentle pace. 2/3rds is on the road with the 1/3rd next to work on a cycle path. As it's a short journey, it's not much quicker to drive in but a lot cheaper.
I find it a nice way to relax on the way home after a day at work. Wish I had put my waterproofs on over my trousers this morning. Legs were freezing and was definitely a woolly hat and gloves day.

How about you Gordoma?

Re: UK

Evening all.

Nice to see quite a few milestones being passed today, including our newest member. Nothing close for me but still plugging away.

At least the cycle to work was a bit less cold today.

Re: UK

Good morning all!

Still a chilly -10c here in Frankfurt. Hopefully after yesterdays snow it's finished for the year and summer can get here. The sooner the better!

Re: UK

Morning All.

Chilly this morning... only -2C, which is toasty compared to Franfurt, it seems.

It's 8-miles each way and I try to stay above 16-17mph on average so at the moment it takes me just under half an hour. I've only been commuting by bike for about 6 months as I'm using it to get fit and lose weight... which is why I've not yet moved over to the metric system favoured by the serious cyclists... or I'd have said 13km each way and 26-27km/h.

I do it for a number of reasons - parking at work is sparse and you either have to get into the office insanely early to get a space or risk being in a "blocked in" space. Also, my car isn't particularly economical (16-18mpg typically), so every time I cycle I save money and the environment... the money-saving thing is actually false, as I've spent far more money on a new bike, equipment and clothing than I've saved on petrol. I'm also competing in the Fastnet sailing race in August and not being the thinnest of chaps, and in order to not let my crewmates down, I've pledged to lose 7-stone between signing up last August and the race... 2lbs a week, every week for 50 weeks. Currently 5-stone down and 2 to go, so ahead of target - mostly thanks to the cycling but with some diet changes too of course... another expense is I've had to buy a whole new wardrobe.

I need to get some serious cycling in this year though as I need to train for next year's event, which is cycling from London to Barcelona. That'll be over 100 miles a day over 9 days... but I still have 15 months to train for that, including getting a proper road bike - and maybe lose even more weight... as the 7-stone loss still won't put me into the "normal" range as per WHO BMI deifnitions, so I certainly won't be a sleek Wiggins by Fastnet.
