From this point on, I would like to add more one suggestion related with this idea, to be evaluated by community and WCG staff.
----------------------------------------As mentioned above by skgiven, when comented: " You would not have received any email about the project coming to an end because you would not have been an active cruncher then and probably didn't read a 3week old announcement. " It appear be a very good additional idea to be evaluated. So, in combination and partnership with skgiven idea, in addition to the original idea of this thread, I would like to propose that at sametime that WCG staff will post a notice in the forums (advising about the 60 days left of new work), send too an email with the same notice to all WCG community. The main reason to add it, is that the notice in the forums just reach the active readers, which are a small number of people when compared with the WCG members listed to receive emails from WCG.
Cheers ! GIB@

As an evolution of shared discussions and thougths presented here, I would like to synthetize all inputs observed until now, which are directly related with the original purpose of thread:
----------------------------------------======================================= 1) GIBA: "send a notice in the forums advising about the 60 days left of new work." 2) smeyer55: "provide a page with estimated completion dates for all projects similar to what SekeRob used to put out as a chart." 3) skgiven: "a basic status page that simply lists the active projects, end dates if and when known, and any current problems. A quick reference page, the same as other projects use. If you stop picking up tasks or they all fail it would be useful to have a known place to go where you can simply check the status of all the projects. For newcomers, this would better facilitate the decision of which projects they want to crunch for." 4) GIBA: "to consider put the 60 days advises in place of the 30 days advises, and in this way don't add more work to tech team but just antecipate the action to advise the WCG community about the final of projects." 5) nasher: "an estimated end date of all projects when posible." 6) skgiven and GIBA: "send an email to all WCG members listed to receive it, at sametime that WCG post in the forums a notice advising about the 60 days left of new work." ======================================= I will update it, when applicable. Thank you all for your colaboration.
Cheers ! GIB@

some thread link me here, so here is my 2 cent.
----------------------------------------- 60 day warning is a good idea. - end date is a good idea - percentage is _even better_ idea - time taken for that percentage - completion date based on above - completion date based on weekly data (?) - and a LARGE disclaimer for all above data. Why? People come and go. Join and quit(research and WCG). Badge collectors make rounds (all 14, then all 45, then all 90, by joining one by one research). Combine with many other data, completion date that we get is as good as windows file copy ( http://xkcd.com/612/ ). and all of this on one page, updated automatically every monday or friday. Even now on HCCC I notice that some badge hunter are abandoning it left and right (and admitting it). Some have enough CPU power to equal 50 of normal user combined. This would lead to original 30 day change, in a way, for better or worse, since there also finisher type (like me) who swarm almost finish research to get it done and over with. i think they decide the 30 day is because, due to amount left, and compared to user behaviors, will not change much, except maybe +- 5 days? Larger warning date (60 day) will lead to larger +-, and some people don't like this. Anyone who experience windows copy knows better. Except every time we visit the 'finish date' page, it will say the research will finish in 1 year, 8 month, 9 month, 1 year again, 7 month... |

I'm quite certain the staff has seen it and, it seems, they have responded to the suggestion too. |

Makes it easier to plan vacations and moves, etc. Home processers could avoid Suspending and unplugging at the wrap-up of a project. WCG doesn't send too many emails to keep up with, they're worth reading.
It's good to know someone's keeping track of things. ![]() |
