Re: Computing for Clean Water 64 bit - version 6.16

Thanks for all the effort that you put into accommodating 64bit processing.

Looks good,

Re: Computing for Clean Water 64 bit - version 6.16

Well, my four finished a heck of a lot quicker than the first set - although still took longer than others who are reporting here... Personally, this is a bit of shame to me - as I'm still around 19 hrs short of Silver - but, that's by the by and it'll come eventually...

Re: Computing for Clean Water 64 bit - version 6.16

Hi.

I have only got the one task so far, nice speed up & credits are closer.

One thing i don't know if the graphics are suppose to work but there not on Ubuntu x64, i just get a black pop up with a blue line up the left side i guess that's the progress bar.?

Re: Computing for Clean Water 64 bit

Think btw, that someone (Ingleside?) commented that a 64 bit client is not a requirement, just the OS needing to be 64 bit, but could be mistaken.

Yes, starting with the v6.10.xx-version of clients, it doesn't matter if the BOINC-client is 32-bit or not. It will still report the "main" OS-platform, and for anyone running a 64-bit windows-OS this will be "windows_x86_64".

Now, if this change was included for all v6.10.xx-clients, or maybe just the later ones I don't remember, but a quick test reveals that atleast with the 32-bit v6.10.58 (didn't test the WCG-one) it's reporting as 64-bit platform, and SIMAP happily downloaded some 64-bit-application-work.

I have just got home and see that I have a few of these running. I couldn't remember having installed the 64-bit version so have checked to see where it is installed (it's in Program Files(x86)).

I have also checked Task Manager and see that I have boincmgr.exe *32 running, so I think it's a cert to conclude that a 64-bit OS running 32-bit version of WCG will be enough to run these 64-bit exclusive tasks.

I hope this is enough to give a definitive answer to the original question wink

Re: Computing for Clean Water 64 bit

OK, here's a version 6.15 C4CW to compare timing with betas on my AMD Phenom machine running 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04.

AMD Phenom II X4 610e, 2.6 GHz

BETA_ c4cw_ target03_ 061006324_ 0-- kate-amd64 Valid 2/24/11 03:33:45 2/24/11 12:31:18 4.28 108.4 / 89.6
BETA_ c4cw_ target03_ 061000474_ 0-- kate-amd64 Valid 2/24/11 03:34:05 2/24/11 12:31:18 4.22 107.0 / 89.7

c4cw_ target03_ 055474594_ 0-- kate-amd64 Pending Validation 2/24/11 14:46:04 2/25/11 04:32:56 4.97 125.8 / 0.0

The speed-up is nearly 45 mins or 15%. I thought I remembered that the Phenom had seemed to be underperforming on C4CW when I last ran them on it. Not any more now with its 64-bit capabilities being used! smile

Is there anyone else out there running Linux on a Phenom who can confirm this magnitude of speed-up?

I haven't managed to pick up a regular C4CW on my Intel Core 2 Duo machine to make a similar comparison there; will post when I do.

Re: Computing for Clean Water 64 bit

Got 21 units in total, 2 with app version 6.15, the rest was 6.16.
Comparing to previous version (6.14) 6.15 was little slower (5:55 vs 5:45), but 6.16 sped up to 5:10. Nice :)

Re: Computing for Clean Water 64 bit

Exciting that a 64-bit version has been developed!

I have received 3 WUs, all on my 2 faster machines. One has started running, and the other machine should start in on the two it got in less than a hour. Both are Linux (Ubuntu 10.04).

The estimated times to completion are off -- 3:45 on my fastest machine vs 2:45 on my second-fastest machine. But who knows what BOINC is trying to go by since neither of these machines has been crunching C4CW lately.

Edited to add: These betas have a 3-day deadline.

I hadn't noticed that...the 3-day deadline! Started the 2 betas by suspending other WUs.

Re: Computing for Clean Water 64 bit

I've been crunching c4cw on a 64 bit machine and got a set of betas for it. As far as I can see it has increased efficiency by about 6%. Not as much as I was hoping for, but perhaps it depends on how much the particular WU's can take advantage of it.

What we need is an extended run of betas to get more data for comparison. biggrin

Re: Computing for Clean Water 64 bit

2 beta's on a brand new W7 laptop.

Both PV with 4.36 and 4.37 hours crunching. Without wanting to join the 32-bit or 64-bit discussion, I do hope for more beta's. It's been longtime since my last Beta badge upgrade.
