Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Hi everybody! You may have noticed a certain tardiness in our updates over the last couple of days. The whole team is slaving away to make several deadlines, so logposts may be a bit sparse and slow for ten more days. We hope you have some patience with us.
Best wishes
Your Harvard CEP team

We’ve reached a new milestone by passing the mark of 8 billion points! Great job, everybody!

Now if you really want to impress me mr cleanenergy scientist type person... tell me how many electrons of computing power that equates out to! Just kidding.

Yes that is a good milestone and I can see us at 10B here real soon. But think of it this way, if each point was a byte it would fit on a small thumb drive :)

More fun thinking about the physical size of the thumb drive required to hold 8,808,280 results. At (for the sake of contemplation) 30 MB per result, that is some 252 terabytes - or about 1,000 256 GB thumbdrives. One well-known vendor's 256 GB thumb drive measures 74.99mm x 23.29mm x 15.9mm, or 27.7696219 millilitres. So all of the results would fit in a 27.77 litre volume; call it 25 litres to reduce out duplicate packaging. Or the aquarium on the right in this YouTube video . Not all that big...but you probably wouldn't want it hanging off your laptop.

Not to mention that many of that vendor's 256 GB thumb drives would set you back circa $700,000.00. Don't think CEP dropped that much on their storage arrays.

(Note: My math - and my assumption about average result size - may be so much hooey...almost certainly in the case of the latter. blushing I'm just...idling.)

So much about the cheap abundance of plastics - now we just have to utilize it in a meaningful and beneficial way. A nice weekend to all of you!

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Nice, reusing bags for groceries is a longer practice and it so happens that about 18 months ago it became illegal [in Italy] for the walmart type shops to give bags for free [charged 10 Eurocents a pop]. It's amazing how many have already converted to the highly durables. We have a few that take huge amounts and are now 20-30 years old... not anything new this concept... for European shoppers. One of the bags is insulated, for the stuff that goes into the cooler. Probably US suburbans have a huge powered cooling box in the trunk for the perishables [we got a small portable for the hot summer days shopping runs]

Crunching On, for clean energy from [recycled] plastics.

Hi CleanEnergy Team,

I look forward to reading your project log entries.

I'd like to suggest dual threads be considered.
One as a no reply sticky thread that will be easy for future readers to examine your posted information without having to wade through many pages, and a second to facilitate discussion.
I think a 'clean' log will be a beneficial enduring record of the project.

thanks

Hi SMEBS,

Just curious, you joined in June of last year, but don't see a single result registered against this member name. We can offer all the help you need [in configuration support], to get your computer(s) started on contributing it's spare cycles towards CEP2. Just give us a shout, in a separate thread, of course. smile

That "intermingling" does make it a chore for content aggregators and bloggers who are trying to increase their traffic by incorporating the efforts and results of a global group of volunteers and so transform non-profit into profit. Especially those whose familiarity with the Internet is such that they haven't found the Clean Energy Project home page and its links to CEP2 milestones. One must particularly empathize with those who have not as yet stumbled upon the CEP Facebook page; but that is understandable: The mere creation of a technology does not instantly result in all people being experts in that technology.

We’ve seen very nice returns of 18-20y/d over the last couple of days! This is an awesome achievement – thanks so much to all of our crunchers! Keep up the good work, everybody.
