Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Hi everybody,
Sorry for the delayed answers – as you may have guessed we had crunch time again.

@Ascholten: In this first try with the storage pod we have bought all drive at once and they are all 2TB Barracudas. Backblaze mentioned that compatibility can be an issue. We subdivide the 45 drives into 3 RAID6 sections with each 15 drives. Next time around we may split up the purchase of the drives into these 3 sections to save with the falling price. One problem is that one cannot fully test the built before commissioning the pod.
Sorry, there will be no beta test as the servers and primary storage arrays (Ms Piggy 1 & 2) will stay in place and we’ll only move over results from Ms Piggy to Jabba in a second step.

@dataman and anahi: Nice try biggrin. Go ahead and try to get it to fill up as fast as possible. LOL. Again, the upload side does not change, just the long term storage. Actually the servers will be a bit relieved because we will move our analysis scripts onto Jabba.

@dataman: We have been checkpointing after each job all along – we try to get additional checkpoints within each job but that isn’t finished yet. It works in general but increases the risk of successive failure and is more complicated.

@Ascholten: I am also confused how you got that idea. There are already plastics that work, just not all that well. We haven’t yet found a new material. Also: The experimental test on our best candidates for example may well take a year...

Okidoke, we are back up to date smile . Best wishes

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Quick tech question.

Long story short. I have a computer that I can NOT connect to the internet. When I ran the einstein project on it, all I had to do was take the data directory from it, move it to a net connected computer that had boinc installed on it, let it do it's thing, upload old download new and then move it back to the non net computer. Obviously the existing data directory on the net computer was temporarily moved somewhere else since you can't mix data directories, then moved back after the transfer.

I would like to do this with CEP as well however it seems that this project does not like that very well. Last time or so I tried it appears that it won't recognize the 'other' computer as a 'different' computer like einstein will and treats it as a blow up on the 'net connected' computer and just reloads the projects or aborts a bunch of them.

Is this even doable with CEP and if so, what am I doing wrong?

Thank you
Aaron

Debut of the first practical “artificial leaf”

Is there any connection to your project?

If not, you could work together smile

edit: I suppose it's the same project as mentioned here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,29878_offset,0#317618

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

@Ascholten: What you are trying to do, copying BOINC files to & from the Internet-connected computer, has been named "sneakernet", so search the forums for that. The BOINC system, or at least WCGs way of using it, makes sneakernetting very difficult, but Sekerob suggests it may be possible here .
PS: This topic really belongs in the BOINC Support Forum because it applies to all WCG projects, so I suggest you make further posts there. Your questions will come to the attention of more BOINC experts there too.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

The Harvard Research Computing team came by the other day to have a look at Jabba. They seemed to be pleased with the outcome of this project. Since it turned out to be much less of a pain than originally anticipated, they may look into adopting this technology at some point in the future.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Dear Rickjb,
thanks for addressing Aarons question - we actually haven't tinkered with this before.

Dear Crystal Pellet,
we are not connected to Dan Nocera and there is not much overlap between our and his research beyond the general topic of solar energy harvesting. We try to help develop plastic solar cells to produce electricity while the group at MIT uses a silicon and organometallic based approach to split water into hydrogen and oxygen to be used as fuel. But his work is definitely very exciting as well. There are many ways in which solar energy can be used to tackle our energy supply problems in the future.
Best wishes

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Thanks for the reply, I posted in a few of the other forum places seeking information however it does not seem to be a very recent topic or one that is doable w/o a bit of hastle. We shall see soon enough hopefully.

We now passed the 2,500 years of computing time mark on the WCG. This is great! Thanks for all your support!

The head of Harvard Research computing posted an article about Jabba on his blog.
