POEM is a Bio-Molecular (proteins) project that sends out OpenCL tasks for AMD cards. There seems to be a GPU task shortage, so if you add this project don't expect a steady flow of work units. Since 30 April, POEM has been sending me all the tasks I can process together with my ongoing WCG work. ![]() Here's some info from the POEM@HOME web site: Proteins are the nanoscale machinery of all the known cellular life. Amazingly, these large biomolecules with up to 100,000 atoms fold into unique three-dimensional shapes in which they function. These functions include all cellular chemistry (metabolism), energy conversion (photosynthesis) and transport (oxygen transport), signal processing in the brain (neurons), immune response and many others, often with an efficiency unmatched by any man-made process. Protein malfunction is often related to diseases and thousands disease-related proteins have been identified to date, many with still unknown structure. To understand, control or even design proteins we need to study protein structure, which is experimentally much harder to obtain than the information about the chemical composition (sequence) of a specific protein. By joining this project you will contribute to a computational approach to predict the biologically active structure of proteins understand the signal-processing mechanisms when the proteins interact with one another understand diseases related to protein malfunction or aggregation develop new drugs on the basis of the three-dimensions structure of biologically important proteins. POEM@HOME implements a novel approach to understand these aspects of protein structure, which lends itself very well to worldwide distributed computing. The scientific approach behind POEM@HOME is a computational realization of the thermodynamic hypothesis that won C. B. Anfinsen the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1972. So please help us, by joining POEM@HOME, solve the scientific mysteries described above and decipher the biological information encoded in proteins of unknown structure. POEM@HOME is a purely academic, non-profit project to improve our understanding of biomolecular structure and function. All substantial result of POEM@HOME will be published in international peer reviewed journals with proper credit to the POEM@HOME volunteers. ![]() crunching, crunching, crunching. I don't think so, I was on POEM for a month and it had a hard time feeding even one of my GPUs. About 95% of the time my GPUs were idle, and when they did get work units they were all completed in under an hour. POEM is not ready as a GPU project yet since they don't make enough work units for everyone to compute.

Poem has just recently, within the last few days, rethought their workunit offerings and is now giving out HUGE amounts of gpu units and very few cpu units. As of right now the Server Status is: POEM++ 90,162 29,591 2.48 (0.44 - 6.74) 1,781 POEM++ OpenCL version 8 20,783 Well it looks like they went back to the cpu units again, HMMMMM!!! Maybe it is a day by day thing, my gpu's are full of Poem units and my cpu's are EMPTY of Poem units, maybe it is time to click Update manually!! ![]() ![]() |

Yeah - I joined POEM for 24 hours using my gaming rig at home, and didn't get any GPU work, so I quit it, and joined it to WCG instead. Of course, still no GPU work, but at least I know it's OpenCL ready when work finally does come through.
----------------------------------------Anyone got a new estimated time frame? I've been thinking of upgrading my gaming rig anyway, and this might be the excuse I need. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 4, 2012 3:12:23 AM] |

So far in May (running 12/7) I have received some 219,000 points from POEM. Looks good to me. ![]() ![]() crunching, crunching, crunching. AMD Ryzen 5 2600 6-core Processor with Windows 11 64 Pro. Hey, and now it's time to do some WCG CPU crunch plugging over at the POEM forums.
Thx --//-- |

What kind of gpu do you have, if you have an Nvidia there is also: http://boinc.freerainbowtables.com/distrrtgen/index.php TONS of credits, they mean nothing in the overall scheme of things, but it is easy and the units are not too long. I have Nvidia 560 Ti, the crippled one, and am getting this on average: 21790681 15792568 37654 3 May 2012 | 19:03:24 UTC 4 May 2012 | 13:23:30 UTC Completed and validated 2,241.71 11.04 8,758.00 Distributed Rainbow Table Generator (distrrtgen) v3.48 (cuda23). That is 8,758 credits for just over half an hour of gpu work. REMEMBER credits are WORTHLESS and mean NOTHING from project to project!! But half an hour workunits is an easy thing while waiting for WCG to come back with some more Beta units. ![]() ![]() |
