Re: HCC with GPU

Not trying to be a "Intel fanboy". I still buy cheap Phenom II's when they're around, like the 830 I picked up for $50. Just posting graphs. Compared to Intel, they are power hogs.

If you know which projects you like run are mainly/only integer, than it's not a bad idea since yes, they do have more integer cores. However, that shows in it's power consumption. No extra power is free. smile

Ehm, this is the gpu thread.... tongue

Re: HCC with GPU

Sorry, this is WCG forums, no "on topic" moderation :O)

(I'm an Intel guy... 43 Watts TDP for my 8 threaded Q2670QM, running at 2700Mhz, and 73-75 Watts/Hour by the Kill-O-watt socket meter. No matter how cheap the CPU, the power here is way too expensive to not make that part of the decision process. Having a contract for 100% guaranteed green (non fossil fuel generated) power... it all still comes from the same 220-240V AC socket, so it's "virtual".)

Re: HCC with GPU

One of the 4850s in my Crossfire setup blew last night :( So there's one less GPU to contribute to the project :(

I was always intending to upgrade to a 7950 or 7970, but was hoping to keep the older 4850s just churning out WUs.

Re: HCC with GPU

Sorry for disturbing your discussion but I don't want to read all the thread:
Do we have a date till now when using a GPU for HCC will be possible? As for me using a ATI for HCC would be fine.

Re: HCC with GPU

WCG only gives advice hours before new project or phase work hits the feeders. Till then, there's no need to read all of this thread, as the latest is in this test announcement thread: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,33141

I think we are still early in the testing phase at this point. There is no hurry to release junk as the flak created would be really bad, they will not release it until it is ready and currently it is not ready. Which for me is a good thing, I like watching my Beta badge stats go up for a change!

Re: HCC with GPU

When the project goes GPU, will we have the option of taking HCC GPU units only, without taking HCC CPU units?

This is being considered.
