Re: Re:

With mine, there was a 11 minute difference between the elapsed and actual time (11:33:59 vs. 11:22:24). I didn't see much (if any) slowing down of the system - although there again, it processed whilst I slept biggrin

Edit : The fifth copy completed without any issues - and thus, mine is now valid biggrin

Re: BETA Clean Energy Project phase 2 version 6.33

On experimenting, fought a battle to get one Beta onto my Linux quad taking 12 hours to download (separate post/thread/story) and it's now concurrently running with 2 production CEP2 jobs so as to push the envelope a little... the purpose of testing is if we can break things under normal operation ;o)

Swappiness is still on zero and committed i.e. does not get lost at boot time, so we'll see whether gap time reduces.

Re: BETA Clean Energy Project phase 2 version 6.33

No doubt going by Elapsed Time for Credit & Run Time makes more sense than using CPU run time for this project, but there are issues and it might not go down well for other projects (WCG and non-WCG). Also just because the latest Boinc Beta client may report elapsed time does not necessarily mean the present server is setup to read it.
From 6 Betas, each on a different platform I only had one immediate failure. However, I would agree, just running a task is not much of a Beta. Given the failures I saw from restarts, task suspensions and usage restrictions I think the Betas should be extended so people can try using their systems, changing settings on Boinc, opening and closing Boinc and so on, to see if the tasks fail in the same way.

I'm going to try a suspend and time of day on Linux and Vista x86, and then a Boinc restart if successful. Only 2 tasks still running.

Note the 2 day return deadline for resends:

Re: BETA Clean Energy Project phase 2 version 6.33

Smokin' only 1 3/4 minute gap after 2 hours on Linux, but holding on to horses as the hole usually gets bigger after those initial few hours. 97% efficiency versus 91 and 88 percent resp. on the 2 regular CEP2 jobs.

6.10 does that already ... from the server side, still reporting version 601 (for years now), but that means little as many patches have been dropping in since. Other projects have long tweaked their credit system to consider system loads and resource usage, so in that it would be calling spades if that were to raise a complaint. It's an idea to acknowledge the resource usage. Mind you how that new credit system works I don't know, so if that's near, I'd not rattle this particular cage.

Re: BETA Clean Energy Project phase 2 version 6.33

The Linux task had already finished but I did manage to do some testing on Vista x86 and XP x86.

Vista x86:
At 9h 50min (76% complete) 3h 12min to run,
Last Checkpoint 9.05
CPU Time 9.10
Elapsed Time 9.50

Leave app in memory ticked.
Suspended task and Resumed. Task picked up from where it was exactly.
Changed to leave app in memory unchecked.
Suspended task and Resumed. Task picked up from last check point.
Last Checkpoint 9.05
CPU Time 9.05
Elapsed Time 9.45
So the elapsed time fell back by 5min, along with the CPU Time.
Boinc closed and opened without Beta issue. Task now at 11h.

XP x86:
About 1h 30min into run.
Leave app in memory unchecked.
Suspended task and Resumed. Task picked up from a very early check point.
CPU Time and Elapsed Time went all the way back to 13min :(
Boinc closed and opened without Beta issue and no problems after restart.
Perhaps we need tasks to checkpoint on suspend & exit somehow. Would be a useful default Boinc setting, along with reporting completed tasks.

Re: BETA Clean Energy Project phase 2 version 6.33

Good news/bad news re the one beta I got (on Linux).

Good:
It ran without error and validated.
The discepancy between CPU time and elapsed time at the end was only 6 min.

Bad:
It seems to have run more SLOWLY than the regular CEP2 WUs on this machine.

CEP2 WUs on this 1.8 GHz dual core Atom D525 with HT usually get to somewhere between job #8 and job #13 before being stopped at 12 hrs. This beta didn't even finish job #2.

yea the beta seems to be running but its seems to be running but also seems to be eating up all the other resources of the computer.

Re: BETA Clean Energy Project phase 2 version 6.33

Lassies and Lads, lets not forget that this IS an Opt-In science. I'm sure WCG works to accommodate as many as possible, but eventually somewhere the line has to be drawn and the specs locked in. If this work does eat resources to the point of un-usablity tweak the client settings to only run them when a device is idle. Those who have months of experience on Linux (moi for instance), have not found it to be excessive and the latest beta on my 4 year old duo centrino is also quite unobtrusive... so if P4's cant keep up or whatever device nasher is referring to, than that is a pity, but has to be.

sorry
