Hexcore with 4GB is tight for running this with 6 concurrent, but think XP-32 could not even address more, and probably cant even use more than 3.1GB. Set Swapfile to zero, boot, try again just one or two. Then do a disk-defrag and after create a new VM. Set that at 6GB (1.5x RAM) as fixed minimum and free expendable to bigger. What I can say from my experience is that 4 GBs are enough for a Hexacore. I ran 6 betas simultaneously on my machine. TaskManager only reported 43%, but taskmanager often only reports crap. I use a 64 Bit system, though. Another reason could be an overloaded HardDisk, which isn't a problem in my case either as I do use a SSD. |

My other hexcore is Win7 64 with 4GB and it never missed a beat on the betas. I have the next 3 days off so I'll be able to dig into it and see if I can find what caused the crashes. Thanks for the suggestions Sek. I will look into all of that.

Message from a wingman:

[snip] Of the 17 work units downloaded, Norton nuked 6 before I caught it. The problem here is I already have my ProgramData/Boinc directory excluded. [mo' snip] As my subscriptions expired, I've been uninstalling NIS/NAV and using microsoft security essentials, windows defender (with Ad-Aware now & then) and the built-in firewall, instead. (ClamAV and iptables in fedora.) NAV kept wanting to delete stuff (e.g. an MD5 hash generator compiled from this public domain source) that was in subdirs I had told it to ignore, and even wrecked an ISO file that came with my Cisco trainer when it quarantined a program to reset router/switch passwords from inside the ISO and when I told it to put the program back it corrupted the image... I reported the problems to symantec and they wouldn't do anything about it, so I finally just gave up on them. |

The hard disk activity from CEP2 is enormous, I've had several machines crash from it. I do not recommend running more than 4 WU's concurrently and even that can grind your rig to a crawl if BOINC is installed on your mechanical OS drive.

9/16/2010 2:52:10 PM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down. I had that problem yesterday evening at about 8:30 PM EST, but by 9:00 PM EST the server was back up. Must be a Harvard thing. |

I have 7 WU's with 5 run through by now - not without mishap - found the system had frozen sometime during the night - very annoying - restarted (having noted %tage progress across all WU's) and found that there was a major reset - not just with Betas but also HFCC (98%) - 4 WU's restarted at 0% (including the HFCC) but retained elapsed time. Got back tonight to find that 2 beta WU's were still crunching at 5+ hrs elapsed (and about the same still to go) and only 58/59% - found that they reported at 60% not long after. Last 2 WU's are underway at the moment - 2hrs down and only 18% complete...... 1.3hrs and 11% complete - it will be interesting to see how these two work out.....I haven't noticed any excessive HD activity but it is SATA and loads of free space and there is 12Gb RAM too, so plenty of slack.

No, I am uploading one right now. If it is still happening, go to transfers and manually try to upload it. |
