I recently moved the project from 1 pc to another which is faster and has a larger HD. My problem is the space restrictions from the old computer seem to still prevent the new machine from receiving more than 3 or 4 WU's. I have the usable HD settings maxxed as well as CPU usage. I also have it set to keep 7 days work on hand. Still it will only get about 4 WU's which barely keep it going for a day.
----------------------------------------How can I resolve this problem? Thank you, Have a great weekend. ![]()

Hi acpartsman.
----------------------------------------You can increase the buffers to include more work by doing several things. Go to your Device Profile on this website (My Grid, My Device Manager, Device Profiles, Default). Assuming you are using the Default, then you click on that profile and click on "Custom Profile" You can then set the % of disk space you are willing to use for WUs and the size of the queue in days (Workunit Cache Settings). I recommend that you not set it too high (over a day or so) unless you have a really good reason for doing so. The notion of setting a work queue is for keeping the computer busy while it is out of contact with the servers for whatever reason..e.g. dialup or server failures. I use DSL so my connection is "always on" and the WCG servers are very rarely down over a few hours. Also, go to the BOINC manager running on your machine and choose advanced, then preferences and click the "Clear" button so that the local BOINC manager will take the default values from the website. Also check with the Device Manager and ensure that the profile you are using with this device is indeed the one that you have modified with the Cache setting mentioned above. Make sense? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 3 times, last edit by RT at Sep 4, 2010 4:48:59 PM] |

Checked that. Made a change to total disk space (cache already set at 7 days...when my dsl is out it's really out) Still no change. Machine will not download more than 5 wu's, which is just under 1 days work for this machine.

I edited my post above. Check the Device Manager to make sure this machine is using the correct device profile and then make sure that the BOINC manager on the machine does not have local preferences set. See it that helps.

Many crunchers, old hands included, do not know that making even a single field change in the Local Preferences screen, copies all from the website prefs into the local prefs, which will then prevail. The quick fix to that is hitting Clear in the Local prefs screen, so at least you know which are in control.
----------------------------------------Years ago there was a redesign effort and was send the functional mock up... yes it really worked, but the developers would not have it or whatever, so was expecting it to appear in Synecdoche, and alternate BOINC agent, but regrettably no... mission was to remain fully compatible with BOINC, so now we still have this situation of not knowing what is in effect but that line in the message log saying the overrides are in use. Are they? edit: just looked Synecdoche up as I still have a functional version 1.1 and found they've update to 1.2. Going to put it on my Linux box just for kicks. http://code.google.com/p/synecdoche/

Yes, clear should normally do it, merely explaining what happens (and sometimes the incredulous: "But I did not enter those" following). There is a message log entry saying the overrides are in effect, but that tab is going in 6.12, so a line up top in the preferences GUI to tell which prefs are in effect would reduce lots of the confusion... ideally right above the Clear button, and the Clear button not showing if there are no local overrides.

Still no change. Will not download more than 4 or 5 WU's & since this is a dual core machine, they just don't last long.

So you have confirmed that the machine you are running on has assigned to it the correct device profile? And that that profile has all the settings that we suggested? And you have cleared all the local preferences on the BOINC Manager?
----------------------------------------If all that is done and you are sure (everything in the above posts), then I am at a loss to deduce what the problem is. Can you copy and paste into a post here the device profile that you are using on that machine? Also, how big is the disk on that machine and how much disk space have on it? As a last resort, I will look into your machine if you wish. You can contact me by using the contactus at my website www.windmillweb.com and I can give you the details on how we can do that. There just has to be a parameter set wrong somewhere. |
