Back when I got the quad for my daughter, I took a fairly simple approach that is a crude version of finding the right spot on the "knee". I was looking at the CPU and getting a quad was less than $150 more over a dual core. Double the crunching for much less than double the cost seemed sensible. I didn't get that fastest speed though and not the slowest either. When the additional cost to get the next faster chip was more than that to get to the current speed, I quit. I'm no hardware guru so I would spend far too much time trying to "max" things for the ideal cruncher. I got what I thought would be good enough. If getting the "better" version/level of something had a lower incremental cost over the lesser one, I got it to the extent the machine was still affordable. Someone who's really up on the technical side of hardware would be able to configure a machine that's closer to the "ideal" cruncher than I ever could. Trust yourself, ask a question or two if there's something you're unsure of. Most brands seem to have their websites set up to not let you configure a machine where everything won't work together. Beyond that, you'll get into the design your own from parts. There should be places where you can post what you're considering and get feedback from other "hardware gurus". You'll probably learn a few things doing that. Main thing is do what you're comfortable doing and relax. You'll always be able to get a better machine for less the longer you wait but at some point, you just have to commit. You'll end up with a decent machine.
----------------------------------------As for Gerald's question, that's way beyond my level but he seems to end up with some pretty good crunchers. He will this time too. ![]() |

* for me, a fast CPU with as many affordable cores as possible, a respectable hard drive and, these days, at least 3MB if not 4MB of memory. I think you mean 3GB if not 4GB. ![]() - D ![]() |

Oh, yes, I realize we're due for a new thread. I hope we can manage with this one until end of the month since we're so close to it already. It's kind of like nice big round numbers - new threads on month boundries. Yea, I'm weird like that.

Cost is certainly an issue and when you look at the high cost difference between the mid and high speed i7's there is quite a difference. Currently building a new machine but a top of the line i7 is at least 3-4 k. Not cheep. Servers with dual processors almost seems to be a better choice. Servers would be a good choice--I could build two 6 core AMD cheaper than Intel and crunch more than a processor with hyperthreading-- ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 26, 2010 11:07:22 AM] |

Good Sunday Morning MOT
----------------------------------------![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I spent many years in a giant company that had two different brands of mainframe computers. It was funny to watch people that worked with one or the other brands, scoff and cast dispersions on the other brand and even on the people that worked with that brand. It amazed me that we all worked for the same company, had the same basic goals and objectives but were sharply divided between the "blue" and the "Grey" camps within the same floor of the same building. (IBM and Univac). It is amusing to watch this same sort of thing today between the AMD and Intel supporters. I guess it is just in human nature for people to somehow distinguish themselves from one another and then for some reason, declare superiority. It is as confusing as it is amusing. Edit: Dubby, you might have a good idea. You thinking about building a 2 by 6 core AMD? What AMD processor(s) are you thinking about? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by RT at Sep 26, 2010 2:46:18 PM] |
