If WCG was ready for ARM processing, what projects that we currently have do you the community think would be best suited? Would it be a long term project like FAH or a short runtime project like HCC? One could justify hanging arround longer as a reason to add additional hardware support where as the other could justify run times more suited for devices not running 24/7. What do you guys think? (This is strictly just opinion and has no wrong answer.)

I remember when people started talking about crunching on graphics cards and I heard all the same arguments: They're not powerful enough, it will never catch on, people won't go to the trouble.
----------------------------------------Fact is, mobile processing is the future. Crunching will be there because that will be where the processing power is. The only question is how quickly will the various sciences adapt. ![]() Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 |

I'm not so sure if our bodies can stand all these microwaves at those higher and higher frequencies but mostly the zillions sapping through 24/7. Don't be surprised that one day 802-11AC is deemed a health hazard, as much as it is to live near a 200,000 volts power line. Like there are safe rooms in the ISS to shield against solar outbursts, thoughts of shielded bedrooms to recover are not outlandish to think of... not a tinfoil hat, but a tinfoil canopy.

Like many of those who have posted their opinion in this thread... are we there yet? No. Will we get there? Most probably. I can remember about a year ago when a cell company came out with a 2 core cell phone and my thoughts at the moment were: "Why would we need that? That's way too much for a cell phone". Now I see that my thoughts might have been off a little. I'm sure technology will eventually get to the point where WCG can be crunched on your phone (and maybe on the blender too

for all of those wanting WCG to run on whatever device... step one is get BOINC to run on that phone / ipod / DVD player / toster / watch / whatever...
----------------------------------------once you can get BOINC running on that device then find any project that will support it... once its stable running a project and everything then and only then is the device or whatever possible to be considered by WCG. Right now WCG is spending a lot of time and energy porting WCG to run on Video cards, and such. right now they are working on getting video cards to run one of the projects... once they get 1 project running then they will probably start to port other projects or new projects to also use the Video cards... if you have been watching the porting of just 1 project to Video cards you will notice it has taken over 7 months already. so basicaly your step one is not talking to WCG but BOINC about getting BOINC to run on your whatever. ![]() |

My opinion is that the usage-profile for a smartphone does not fit with the usage-profile for a crunching device. I envision the development of a separate device specifically designed for crunching while the smartphone will be specifically tailored for the usage-profile of a smartphone. The march towards low-power, high-efficiency power use and high-efficiency loading/utilization, not to mention simultaneous execution -- can only be met with specialized discrete devices running independently, with each device running its own optimized-load or usage-profile. That would be talking about the next step. For now: GPU apps, BOINC on smartphones, and WCG apps running on that BOINC -- as knreed indicated.

nasher, nativeBOINC is already running BOINC projects and has been pretty stable. I have been running PrimeGrid, Milkyway, and WUProp now just fine with no hiccups. Enigma is supposedly capable, but they aren't releasing work right now due to server problems.
----------------------------------------WCG would most likely have less trouble with ARM processors then GPU's, so you are talking Apples to Oranges (IBM compatibles...lol). And, on the Polish team website they have mentioned if project admins needed help getting apps converted to contact them. I think most of it has to do with what support one truly wants. Edit: Forgot to list the Eniga device link. http://www.enigmaathome.net/show_host_detail.php?hostid=80520 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Jun 7, 2012 8:54:41 PM] |
