Re: World Community Grid for Smartphones

Hello jrlorenz9,
My suggestion is that you go to BOINC ( http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ ) and register on the message board. Then you can search for posts by people who started to implement BOINC on smart phones but gave up. Perhaps you can rekindle their enthusiasm. Or perhaps discussing their experience will lead to an appreciation of the difficulties they encountered.

I believe that astrolab was pointing out a real concern about bus speed, memory bandwidth and available memory size. A 1 Ghz phone CPU would probably run at only a fraction of the speed of a 1 Ghz computer CPU. Look up the specs for the smart phone of your choice and try to compare with a PC.

I am not speaking from knowledge but simply giving a personal opinion that I have never been interested enough to check. This is an opportunity for you to make me apologize for my ignorant prejudices. biggrin

Lawrence

Re: World Community Grid for Smartphones

The same $500 could be spent in a decent PC that would make 100x the work of the phone.
Great point. Why spend a bundle to port Boinc to a phone that runs 1/100th of the work.
The current OS of choice is Android. Google bought the company, Google is a mega company, its here to stay for a while
Perhaps for phones, but I am sure both Apple and RIM, who have hundreds of staff that are smarter than the both of us, would disagree about that. Perhaps it is a descent OS for a phone, but let me know when HP, Acer, Dell and Lenovo finish porting Android to their server systems at which point you might have a point.

Re: World Community Grid for Smartphones

I didn't know the WCG forum allowed posting without signing in. Nor did I possibly do a search because I clearly created this thread.

1 GHz in Texas Instruments terms must be less than 1 GHz Intel or AMD lingo. Processors must not be measured by standards, I forgot processors are a new concept.

So how much does Microsoft and Apple pay WCG to suppress Android? 2-1

Do what WCG wants but I'll use the app if its available.

Go Sony

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=6050

At least somebody is still looking at converting "other" devices for this cause. Game consoles may have computer hardware, but what doesn't these days. I think any argument saying that modern cell phones are not computers are ignorant. They are special use computers with flashy PR attached to them.

I will agree that until there is valid facts on results returned, that cell phone processing is still just a hobby.

Re: World Community Grid for Smartphones

Is running WCG on every computerized devise a bad idea...?
Yes. Why? Becasue not every device has a CPU chip that is CAPABLE of running a WCG client. It's that simple. Just because a car has a computer chip does not make a car a computer.

What makes you think that a phone runs as fast as a comptuer? IF a computer takes 4 hours to complete an HCC WU, do you reall think it is going to be a good idea to run a WU on a phone that takes 16 days?

The assumption that you may be making is that the phone is just as fast as a computer and that is the problem. If the phone IS just as fast as a computer, then it would be called a Computer not a PHONE. A phone is horribly slow compared to a computer and TOTALLY not suitable, nor is an electric water heater, digital clock, microwave oven, Timex watch, garage door opener, stop light, air conditioner, automatic door opener, PLC, digital camera, backhoe, washing machine, chain saw, telephone answering machine, billboard or anything else that has a chip but is not a COMPUTER.

I think you are sidestepping the real issue at hand... Can switching to Geico really save you 15% or more on your car insurance?

Is picking a fight with Chuch Norris a bad idea?

How is geigo in the conversation???
And don't smartphone have to recharge evry 16 hours or so
(mine does)

Re: World Community Grid for Smartphones

My wife uses an old smart phone as an alarm clock now and it just stays plugged into the wall. What short-sightedness is it to assume people wont put the phone on the charger. I put mine on a charger before bed, so that is at least 8 hours a day it doesn't run out of juice. Again, with today's WCG work units, I see this as a hobby. Some projects may have a use, but we aren't quite there yet. Maybe WCG will get a future project that has very short low hardware intensive WU's.

To Lawrencehardin: I understand what you're saying. I typed that after hiking and I just woke up realizing what I said. sorry.

Geico said they didn't want me as a customer 6 years ago, so I'll spend my 15% or more on car insurance.

Re: World Community Grid for Smartphones

I would love to see wcg running on every pc, the distributed computing model for this sort of research really impresses me especially since we don't all have access to blue gene etc. I have it running on two PCs, if I had more it would be running on them too. Smartphones are getting more powerful and I really like the idea but after reading your comments I totally agree that it's not feasible. Maybe the iPad... :)
