I found the "update" button. Under manage client there is an option for "Do network communication now" that does this.

Never say never. All correct, but still an incorrect conclusion. Just as the first computer cannot run WCG, so too the current phones cannot run WCG. Someday some other device may. but not the one in your pocket today. The first computer used vacuum tubes and occupied an entire room. Can it run BOINC? No. But it lead to the modern PC which can. The original question is valid. However, the question should be not if it can be done but when it will be done |

That work unit is now valid and received 159.86 credits. It was valid by someone using an ATI GPU.

However, the question should be not if it can be done but when it will be done (In an earlier post it was stated that someone had successfully ported BOINC to a cell phone.) Maybe you drew the wrong conclusion but I stick to what I wrote. BTW Cell phone is an archaic term as modern devices do many things better than voice. A better name would be cell computer (CP) or pocket computer (POC).

Funny, but a smartphone/android ported BOINC is just a manager/gui interface... it crunches zip... BOINC code is opensource and can be moved to a lot of platforms, so code cut to make it fit. The Germans call a mobile phone a "Handy" http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_%27handy%27_mean_in_German . That's what they are, just as a Fernseher is a Weitkucker.

There's zip for a cure for 200+ cancers today but that does not mean it won't happen tomorrow.
----------------------------------------In this case (which closely relates to the thread topic) the Android Application has happened. Primegrid application for Android If it can be done on any grid application, why not WCG? More appropriately, when will it be done with WCG?

The answer ''when it will be done with WCG?" was given some days ago by knreed. It was in this thread... which is just 47 posts long as of my reply.

BOINCOID
----------------------------------------"Boincoid is a port of the BOINC platform to the Android operating system. BOINC was originally written in C++, at the University of California - Berkeley. It came to life along with the SETI@home program also written in C++. Both projects are open sourced, and so we took the C++ code and translated it to Java and then added Android-specific modifications. The result is an Android BOINC client that behaves exactly like the original one. It is re-modeled to fit Java better and offers projects like SETI@home the option to port to Android and then link with our BOINC client. " http://boincoid.sourceforge.net/index.html Although this may not be completed it is definitely underway. One would think that in the future "projects like SETI@home" might include porting a WCG project. Personally I believe this is a lot of work to potentially get such a small amount of WUs completed. Not to mention costs. But, like many technological challenges that came before it someone will find a way. I look forward to running BOINC and WCG on my appliances since they don't have any power issues and my cell phone is busy with Words With Friends and Angry Birds.

Well, so far from my usage...the phone does not get extremely hot. Definitely no where near the burning of the skin level and not even really a worry for over heating the phone. I don't know if it is the built in setting that monitors the battery temp and charge level or if it is just that good of a platform. The discharge of the battery seems on par with watching movies or playing some games, so I don't see that as a long term crunching choice yet. I was easily able to leave it crunching while I unhooked the charger long enough to make phone calls or a few texts. Again, nativeBOINC released enough system resources to allow my phone to operate smoothly while it also crunched. Looking at a laptop that I have borged for MW, my Bionic phone seems to be about half the speed at finishing WU's as an Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2050 @ 1.60GHz laptop processor. I would say this is a pretty good start compared to what the naysayers here seem to claim. I will continue to monitor results once they come in. I only run it about 8-12 hours each evening and I currently have a couple PrimeGrid work units running. They have much longer run times then the MW ones do.
