I have to admit, as an Australian with next to no knowledge of the political situation in the US, I've always been under the impression you folks over there generally believe Obama has been the best thing for the country since, well, <insert something awesome from ages ago here>.. So glancing through the little debate was nice as it reminds me how much I've been blindfolded and manipulated by the media. Politics is a world I personally try to avoid.. the problem with common sense, is that its not that common. I just sleep better at night hoping that they actually know what they're doing and I'm simply missing facts that complete the picture. Ignorance has its advantages.. Marc. It is truly amazing how the main-stream media paints such a pretty picture by simply ignoring the ugly facts.

For the record, the vast majority of Americans approve of Obama. He's polling at roughly 70% approval. It's gonna be a chilly November for McConnell and crew...

Marc. I understand that! If you keep up with it, it hurts your head, makes you mad and gives you an uneasy feeling about the future of your family and our society. I am not surprised that the Australian press presents an unrealistic picture of the politics in the U.S. I lived overseas (mainly England) for years and was amazed at what the English believed about the U.S. based on the English press vs. what I believed based on the American press. Same was true of Norway, France, and most of the other European (east as well as west), Asiatic, South American and African countries that I had the mostly-good fortune in which to spend time. The truth is that none of us know the full truth; just what we are told. This is just another example of that. People on both (really all) sides of the political scene are extremely angry and, as such, talk a lot more than they listen; hence the seemingly endless impassioned debates. (I am not immune to this partisanship; I just prefer not to express it here in a forum that one might think should be a safe haven from politics -- so precious few exist). Further, I feel more in the minority in that I understand that I don't understand and only view the world through what someone else reports. I am very disturbed by all of this. The debates are increasingly vitriolic and partisan; seemingly driving people that are mildly in disagreement, to extremes -- read extremist. I am not a political historian but would not be surprised if the current situation were the most serious schism since the civil war; and all of it based on the hearsay of the media with half-truths sprinkled here and there. I just don't understand why it has to be pervasive in our lives and seep into every nook and cranny of our existence. It seems unhealthy, completely unnecessary and divisive; I hate to think that I need to avoid this forum in order to avoid the venomous debate. There is a lot to say for your comment "Ignorance has its advantages" and I think good mental health dictates a measure of that. |

I just don't understand why it has to be pervasive in our lives and seep into every nook and cranny of our existence. It seems unhealthy, completely unnecessary and divisive; I hate to think that I need to avoid this forum in order to avoid the venomous debate. ----Well i think it is important to discuss our differences from time to time--but i do not want it to be venomous ---At this point in time a lot of folks are paying attention to what the political class of leaders are doing and they do not like the direction the govt. is taking us.The last time i voted was 1960 for Kennedy and i thought as many others that we could trust our elected officials to do the right thing for America.I was working 7 days a week as many hours as i could get so we could live a better life.Having just a 8th grade education i knew i would have work harder and faster and better than everyone else to make do and have all the material things we wanted--house--car--and all that goes with it.I had no idea that politicians were basically out there just for the power and prestige of holding office now i am not saying all of them are dishonest but when they get to Washington they change, again i just could not believe they would do anything to hurt Americans or anyone else for that matter. Then came along the Vietnam war and i started to realize that things were not what they seemed to be.Johnson lying to us to help a corrupt regime in Vietnam--i tried to join the Air Force but not enough education.Good for me because i would have bombed Hanoi without permission and hopefully jane fonda would have been there!! We lost over 50 thousand good Americans plus all of the wounded--then we tucked tail and ran--i couldn't believe we would do such a thing.I thought you fought a war to win!!--but anyway since then i have been watching our country being pushed in the wrong direction as far as i am concerned. If you read the communist manifesto you will see that most of their ideas have come to fruition--prayers out of school--more and more govt.intrusion and control of our lives--women being paid to have children out of wedlock.I think the 1964 civil rights act destroyed the black family and now everyone else that can crawl to the social service office looking for something free. The political leaders giving handouts to buy votes--does anyone see anything wrong with that??pelosi telling us we will see whats in the bill after it gets passed??--Well a lot of folks like me have finally began to realize the politicians are putting the screws to us--as in the tea party people like me they have not been doing their civic duty, paying attention to what the elected officials are doing.Well my finger is getting tired but as a lady in Pennsylvania said you have awakened the sleeping giant--so not to pick on you Jonathon you are just wrong and this November we will see the sleeping American giant get off the couch and put this bunch of criminals out of office!! sorry to go on so long!

Problem is in my opinion the vitriolic debates seem to force the good guys out of polotics. Our current congressman is running but to me it appears not to hard as many people want him to run but I think he is sick of it,

For the latest on more "mundane" matters, we're now on pace for a 162+ million point year. Can you imagine making 175 at year's end? Wow! We should have a new MOT Millionaire tomorrow and are close to having another YTD millionaire.
----------------------------------------Also, I specifically want to send my thanks out to the Baron for his contribution on our non-WCG projects. You folks into GPU computing might want to have a look at what he's doing with a single ATI card. ![]() |

Folks, I've added a short paragraph to the end of our thread's header. I tried to keep it brief. Comments welcome.
----------------------------------------BTW, well done today! Thanks! I still want to get my two cents in though I'm not sure it'll really be worth that much. If I could get over this head cold. Sigh....... |
