@Hardnews, your desktop images are way to big... plz shrink to < 800 pixel wide as it else pushes of the edge on mobile/tablets [to which the with of the forum is adapted]. Alt, just edit to post a link... saves bandwidth for mobile users.
No worries. I forgot there are millions of people who live with images the size of a postage stamp. :-) |

You could have left the image links -without- the [img ] tags, so people could still see your screenshots when choosing to.
Et Alia, This could interest the Cinnamon/Mint lover, with the 'scary' message that this desktop is now using 40% less CPU time than before. To me the question then, what on earth was it all doing before to get this 'improvement' Read: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cinnamon-2-6-I...ss-CPU-Usage-483047.shtml |

You could have left the image links -without- the [img ] tags, so people could still see your screenshots when choosing to. Indeed. Many things are possible. But the internet is transient and fickle. Are you sure that people can access the Intertubes on their telephones? It sounds like a wild and crazy idea which will never catch on. ~~ Ubuntu content: The new box ran for a couple of days without catching fire. But then some wayward and amateurish entry of mine into the terminal brought the Black Screen of Death. It is No More. Ubuntu is fine if you can fix the problems in the time you have available. But, I don't have much time to learn to repair another OS. So 'Trusty Trousers' has been evicted in favour of something more repairable. R.I.P. Let the krunchin' continue. S |

Sort of a wink to the new Hardware CR forum, "Linux 4.1 Offers Potentially Dazzling Performance
snip "This weekend when testing the latest Git code, I noticed one of my desktop test systems is running measurably faster under the Linux 4.1 development code. This system features an Intel Core i7 5960X Haswell-E processor." Here's hoping this kernel also gets shoehorned into the August 14.04 LTS update. |

Just tested my Ubuntu LTS to see what's up with new OpenSSL vulnaribilities that have been fixed. Not yet arrived [Took a while last time, not having ticked "Pre-released updates" in the Software and Updates prog].

Hi KLiK,
This page http://www.hpcloud.com/products-services/compute?t=features gives a better definition of compute units. It is a term that defines the overall capabilities of the instance and is something like a combination of number of processors, memory available and number of cores available. For standard instance types, the chart on the page shows that the cloud compute units is equivalent to the amount of memory assigned. For a standard large instance, you have 4 cores and 8 GB of RAM. Hope that helps. BTW, if you are interested in the cheapest price per hour for the amount of cores that you get, check out the spot prices on Amazon Web Services. |

This thread being about Linux, not about cloud [there's a thread for that], found this: "Linux secrets most users don't know about", certainly found myself to still be thoroughly in the 'most' category. One gem in there is about the Magic SysRq key, how to e.g. unlock a seemingly frozen system [and had a few of those with 14.04 LTS on kernel 3.13... not any longer when upgrading to 14.04.1. The key used to be in the printscreen button place and called 'prt sc / sysrq' or just SysRq. You need to be quite dexterous to push all the keys in the right order, expanded on in this wiki: Magic SysRq
----------------------------------------Oh, and chkrootkit. Installed it and low and behold have something called Suckit in sbin/init. Discussed here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1555330 . Looks like a false positive... Phew Enjoy [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 15, 2015 8:40:46 AM] |

Stupid question but does Kernel 4.X contain all the improvements of say, 3.18? Or any other one before that?
