On Sunday, Linus Torvald build the 4.6 Stable release, on Monday I pushed it into the 16.04 LTS: http://www.ubuntumaniac.com/2016/05/update-upgrade-linux-kernel-46-on.html and just weighing in at a 55MB download at that.
This site is great as any new stable get a 3 line terminal code for quick installing... all you need to do without hands being held is booting :D |

In case you're running 16.04 LTS and you see your BOINC efficiency dropping do a
sudo top -u root If you see appstreamcli running, you're victim of a serious bug in the OS updater. The discussion and fix is from today: http://askubuntu.com/questions/774986/appstre...king-my-laptop-what-is-it After applying the steps, it did not return, but till then it ate 539 minutes since booting some 36 hours ago. A download manager that speeds up fetching files by up to 500%
----------------------------------------http://www.tecmint.com/xdm-best-linux-file-download-manager/ Looks like it setting up multiple threads to the same or distributed sources, and than fits the pieces together as they randomly arrive... alla Emule/BitTorrent. Integrates with the web browser. Nothing much happening on the 16.04 LTS front... barely any fixes arrive since installing, still happily crunching with the 4.6 kernel. Up-day 9 without a need to boot, or be told so. [Edit 1 times, last edit by SekeRob* at May 25, 2016 9:45:30 AM] |

Something I used to use, KSplice to do live kernel patching without need to boot, until Orable Oracle put their hands on it and pulled it from free support. it's now coming back but now as a standard feature of the 4.7 kernel.

GL Thanks Rob. I had the bug. The solution took care of it. A painless fix I might add. I 'm assuming the fix is built into the updated software. Thanks to all involved in the Solution and getting the word out! yoro42 ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by yoro42 at May 27, 2016 8:10:34 PM] |

Completely missed it, but some [not me], have issues with Ubuntu 16.04 and especially WiFi is being obstinate, so is written. Well, my
Yesterday I tried, hot-off-the-press, 4.6.1 kernel on 16.04, initially booting fine, then just before the log in screen is supposed to show it crashing to terminal and going through a number of setup steps then ending at initramfs with a blinking cursor. Booted again, but now in 4.6.0 and all is fine again. What it is, don't know, but is does not seem to like what's in the system... and just 2GB on 1 strip and running all sciences 4 concurrent to validation without a misfire through 4.6.0. There are many hits on Google, such as the below action link, so have to dig what this is really about http://askubuntu.com/questions/137655/boot-drops-to-a-initramfs-prompts-busybox |

Went about to remove 4.6.1 kernel, no hope, no glory for this build and back on 4.6.0... 4GB RAM acquired to replace the older than old 2GB that was still working, and surprisingly, these strips are only half height of the old ones, and the system seemingly running a tid-bit cooler.
As for kernels and LTS 16.04, the maintenance path has just been added to the wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack . First there is 16.04.1 to come in August with kernel 4.4, which is rather surprising as 4.6.0 is doing a dandy job on mine since a few weeks, and then 16.04.2 is planned for Feb.2017 with 4.8, and after that it's open, but every 2nd and 8th month of the year there's an update planned. First see if I can cram in 4.7 when it's out, in about 6-7 weeks, if Linus keeps up is relentless Sunday build pace. |
