One of my boxes didn't want to boot from a USB schtick. In order to get it to boot from USB, I had to insert the USB schtick, modify the BIOS to put the USB at the top of the boot order, shut down the PC and start it back up with the USB schtick still in place, then it would boot from the USB.
If I ever shut it down and started it back up without the USB in place, the BIOS would auto-magically move the USB drive to the bottom of the boot order. You might be having a completely different challenge, but I thought I would offer up the suggestion as something to try. Cheers, CJ |

Thanks for reminding, CJ. Tried that in past, but getting some hash error, the BIOS not upgradable... this Q6600 is 8 years old come Boxing Day. Who knows this time it will, newfangled USB 3.0 64GB drive stick in a 2.0 USB port... There's also a 3.0 USB card in the PCI express slot, but having the BIOS see that at POST... bare knees praying required on the cocosmat :|

Actually, I have no complaints about the W8 performance, just the interface on a regular computer does as good as perfect vacuum... implodes your user experience in a fraction of a second. Visit http://upgradefromwindows8.com for the what you may not know. But lets forget the W-OS in this thread [discovered few days ago that their skydrive cloud utility was perpetually sucking near a full core, lets talk U-OS, and configure Ubuntu 13.04 as 'The Perfect Server' or engage in6 Things to do after installing 13.04 (burned the final to a DVD, as my Linux box refuses to boot from a USB schtick. Soon that one will be upgraded from the heavily 'in favor of crunching' tweaked 12.10). SekeRob--Good Stuff-- I an using mostly Lubuntu with one Ubuntu--just happen to think Lubuntu less to get in the way of crunching ![]() |

When running my 8core laptop on Linux off the USB schtick drive, there's always been the situation of running substantially hotter. Now there is a new solution on hand to improve this, let your battery charge run the laptop run longer too: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-improve-ubuntu-laptop-power-management.html
(Not tried, interested in any hands-on feedback). |

Did I mention a few days ago how there was no systray icon on Ubuntu Unity, did this article pop up: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/how-to-re-enable-notification-area.html . Since installing Wine and Q4wine before [to make BOINCtasks installation easy], this provided an example of how to add items to the whitelist in dconf editor, it was easy to figure how to get the good old BOINC icon back on the top panel. Here's how mine looks:
['JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Wine', 'boinc', 'Update-notifier'] After restarting Unity, have the BOINC icon, needle head size, and right clicking the offer to Open BOINC Manager, to Snooze, to see About and to exit [leaving the core daemon running] Enjoy, if you will. |

From Rob earlier:
Oh BTW, still using Unetbootin from Windows session to fetch a fresh nightly Ubuntu live_x64 and install straight to the USB memory drive. Else I use sudo apt-get uddate && sudo apt-get upgrade, but that skips any kernel updates, but then there's still sudo synaptic [after installing this rpm manager], to force the kernel updates. If you want it to do kernel updates, try sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade. At least that works on Ubuntu server, should work on Ubuntu desktop. Also from Rob earlier: Thanks for reminding, CJ. Tried that in past, but getting some hash error, the BIOS not upgradable... this Q6600 is 8 years old come Boxing Day. Couldn't get it to boot from a USB until I found this trick. As soon as the box starts powering up, press the F8 key (a bunch of times maybe). When I do that on my machine, it comes up with a menu that says "Please select boot device" and the USB drive is listed. I was able to successfully boot from the USB. Good luck, CJ |

CJ,
Yeah thanks, stumbled few days ago on the apt-get dist-upgrade when upgrading from 12.10 to 13.04 ... first time a lossless Ubuntu upgrade and BOINC continuing where it left off. Let me precise on the USB booting... the boot device of USB can be chosen, except it then just sits there after some hex spitting, the same USB schtick, that works in my laptop. |

Something I had tugged away under a pinned tab in Firefox [something just one small icon sized and stuck, not lost even after FF crashes] until unpinned. 30 Things I did After Installing Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail
Running sans GUI, so I cannot be 'compelled' [Is that not something from the Exorcist ;?]. The one I did do first was the "Disable Unnecessary Error Messages from Appearing in Ubuntu 13.04'' Linux On. |

On Sans GUI, was reading about the progress NVidia was making with their drivers for Linux through their 331.20 release, one review at http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTUwNjA . Since having 13.10 Ubu with 13.11 kernel since a few weeks, decided to give them a go, googled a bit for a ppa [don't like any of these "sh ./" methods] and found http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu for saucy main. Added it to the repository list, updated Synaptic [can't get to like USC] and picked them packages, 3 in all, the chief item listed as nvidia-331 and another as nvidia-settings-331. Let the installation run, booted, confirmed in the "additional drivers" screen Nvidia binary Xorg driver... 331 (open source) was active and conclude now after a few graphical sessions and playing a few videos... this one is zooming... no artifacting at all flip-flopping around the various applications. Still running the disk in ext2 format... no gain observed for CEP2 compared to ext3/ext4, which was a small hope, but all else crunching just keeps running in the 99+ efficiency realm... The MCM graphics look fine, do we have 23 or 24 chromosome pairs (seem to see 24 when expanding the graphics window... maybe it's 22 plus X and Y... not read the project FAQs to see what's being represented ;o).
Crunching on, on Linux too. |
