Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

RaymondFO, nothing has changed to the run times as basis of the comparative test, the credits just a side show.

SekeRob, Spot, and skgiven, Thank you for the input and clarification.

The Unbuntu phase is now complete as the last WU was crunched. HPF2 was the lowest successfully processed WU project.

Windows 7 commenced operations on 13 March 2012 at 01:48:50 UTC. Prior to Windows crunching, the hard drive was uninstalled, wiped clean, and twice re-formatted so no Linux files or boot files was on the hard drive when Windows 7 was installed.

Please note it took Unbuntu approximately 33 days for the lowest project to reach 100 WU's.

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 beta1. So far, so good. The real problem, though, is that the distribution's BOINC version is 7.0.14 which, unfortunately, doesn't work that well with WCG.

So, instead, I got 7.0.20 from Berkeley's download page and use that instead. At least until there's a more usable version available in ...

Here's a quick how-to for everyone facing the same problem:
  • download the client from Berkeley
  • stop the previously installed client:
    sudo service boinc-client stop
  • unpack the downloaded file by executing it, e.g.
    bash boinc_7.0.20_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh
  • edit the appropriate line in /etc/default/boinc-client to point to the correct client, e.g.:
    BOINC_CLIENT="/home/marvey/BOINC/boinc"
  • start the client again:
    sudo service boinc-client start

You may want you use a more elegant solution in terms of the new client's location. If so you can insert a couple of steps between 3 and 4 above:
  • move the unpacked folder to /usr/local:
    sudo mv BOINC /usr/local/boinc && sudo chown -R 0:0 /usr/local/boinc
  • link the boinc, boinccmd and boincmgr executables to /usr/local/bin:
    cd /usr/local/bin
    sudo ln -s ../boinc/boinc .
    sudo ln -s ../boinc/boinccmd .
    sudo ln -s ../boinc/boincmgr .

Client works fine, as the log shows:
16-Mar-2012 01:56:41 [---] Version change (6.12.33 -> 7.0.20)

Was a good read. Thanks. Would have kept one of my crunchers on ubuntu but needed wireless and couldn't get my USB configured. After a few weeks I through in the towel and installed win7. Still think Linux is allot better than windows but still a PITA to configure certain things.

Top 5 Linux Monitoring Tools. Web Based. Linux system monitoring is one of the most important tasks for every sysadmin: it is crucial to know everything about system including CPU load, network traffic statistics, memory consumption, logged in users, availability of disk free space or service. And it’s inevitable that something breaks or goes down from time to time so usually it’s just better to know it happened from Linux monitoring system’s alert rather than from angry user.

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

Why Ubuntu always gets to a full stable state just weeks before the next 6 monthly release is a puzzling matter, but it is very stable right now on 11.10.

KSplice popped up to tell there was a bunch of items to integrated into the kernel and it did so in the usual style of applying without need to boot. Then 10 minutes later, 3.0.0.17-20 kernel was announced, applied, and decided to boot anyhow since that does not kick in without doing so [was on 3.0.0.16-19. 2 minutes later the box was crunching again... smooth hands off start and resume.

Oh, and GNOME 3.4 is out. My reading is, it wont be coming with 12.04, so I'll stay with 11.10 since the 3.4 ISO is available to integrate in 11.10.

And today finally figured out why GFUW would not let incoming LAN traffic for file/printer server through when on. Samba also needed to be added to the shares... now things are A OK across the board. The things one has to do in a mixed OS environment when Windows is treated like the arch enemy (not going to opine on the write or wrongs... May one I've been using Ubuntu for 2 years and done as much command line hacking as 20 years ago on Xenix... so much on the GUI front is still in the dark ages on this platform)

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

The term “Ubuntu” hails from South Africa and is defined as “humanity or kindness”… The meaning of this word is the whole philosophy behind the operating system named after it — Ubuntu.

The company of Ubuntu believes that software should be available free of charge, that tools should be usable by people in their native language and despite any disabilities, and that users have the accessibility to customize and make changes to their software as they please. Well if that didn’t sound awesome enough, here are a few more reasons to love Ubuntu: http://www.linuxscrew.com/2011/11/04/a-few-re...uxscrew+%28Linux+Screw%29

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

There's only a few days left now until Ubuntu 12.04 is released. Luckily the BOINC client software included has very recently been updated from the faulty version 7.0.15 to 7.0.24. I've run 7.0.23 before and am now on 7.0.25 without any issues, so 7.0.24 should be OK as well.
BTW, version 7.0.25 is not an alpha/testing version any more (as can be seen on the Berkeley download site).

Latest Ubuntu version coming up a few days from now and with the latest BOINC version packaged in? Awesome! I've been itching to upgrade!
