Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

Has anyone published a test or survey of Win 7 vs Ubuntu running various mixed projects with actual data being presented? If not, I will run one of my computers running Ubuntu (32 bit) then Win 7 OS (64bit) and publish the results. If both OS's must be 64 bit that can be arranged (I can only do Win 7 64 bit) but will take one additional day. CEP2, HCC, HPF2, and HMCD2 would be the test projects, and hard drives will be similar (7200 rpm), no SSD's, and otherwise same exact computer config. Comments?

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

For the sake of the test I would recommend running Ubuntu 64-bit, otherwise I can't wait to see your results. Just make sure to run one project at a time, in order to obtain the most accurate results.

Looking forward to the results post.

Happy crunching!

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

64 bit machines execute 32 bit apps faster, contrary to many believes. No there are no general tests on hand. The members do these loosely when a new science or version comes around. My concern is the continued large gap on Linux between Elapsed time and CPU time when this on the same device on W7-64 does not show i.e. it's not the hardware.

Doing the test in a day... well you need minimum 100 of steady length running sciences such as HCC and C4CW, maybe FAAH and HPF2. The CEP2, GFAM/DSFL etc are so variable, that a small set even when simultaneously downloaded can give wide run time variances. We know that C4CW is slightly slower on Linux and that HCC is on par with Windows.

Now, the late last week mentioned WUProp project gives larger volume stats, but unfortunately, have not seen a screen there where 2 CPU/OS combo's can be compared to assist in decision making to those crunchers about to get something new or are interested to switch "camp".

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

Let's change the test parameter as follows:

1) Unbuntu 11.10 64 bit and Win 7 64 bit (Home edition);
2) HCC, FAAH, HPF2, C4CW will be the projects (subject to change);
3) Same physical computer, with different but similar physical hard drives (7200rpm);
4) Last WU project with a minimum of 100 runs will complete the cycle for that OS;
5) Project will start 9 Feb. 2012 at 00:00 UTC (projected);
6) Publish all results subject to 100 WU per project minimum run.
7) 0.0 cache (Added)

Notes:
a. Expect two (2) weeks run time per OS with approximately another week for validations.
b. Raw results sorted by validation date for each OS to be published on WCG board.

The chip is not hyper threaded enabled. I can run a similar test if the results are not conclusive, or input dictates otherwise.

Topic is still open to further discussion.

RaymondFO, thanks for taking the time to engage in your proposed test. The community, I'm quite sure, would be interested in the results of the proposed test. The testParameters look good to me. I'm looking forward to the results.

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

I think the only way we can figure this out is for the techs to supply us with 1 wu for all OS's. A controlled wu so to speak. But the problem is, does it get run by itself or with other wu's. My win7 64 crunches 23 while my ubuntu crunches 11. If I wasn't crunching climate on my win7 machine, would dry out my cache and boot up ubuntu (it's dual boot) to see if I still have the same issue. Easier for me to purchase win7 and install it on my ubuntu rig to test though. Will have to wait until I see a special on win7 again to get it.

Project started a little early at 8 February 2012 at 23:46:25. Unbuntu 11.10 64 bit is running first. Based upon preliminary runtimes from the 10.04 32 bit version, this should take several weeks and FAAH, C4CW, HPF2 and HCC are the selected projects. Any repair units received will be processed normally without the repair unit "jumping ahead" of other WU's, unless otherwise directed by WCG requests or parameters.

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

Not sure if anyone has tried this but am drying out my cache, then adding a mechanical hard drive (secondary). Will uninstall boinc, the reinstall boinc on the secondary drive. Anyone ever try this?

RaymondFO, can you list the specs of your test cruncher?

I have done this on a couple of Windows machines, but not on a Linux system. Worked OK on the Windows machines.

Cheers

Joe, any improvements when you did this?
