Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

For the beginning Linux users that suffer from retro-fits, there now Zorin... a Look and Acts like Windows 7, but underneath there's Linux.

Pre-install of the WINE windows emulator, soon to be released in v 1.4, is included.

For the select few whistling who use KSplice to do bootless system and kernel updates, such as needed today for 10.10 and 11.04 due some security patches, per http://news.softpedia.com/news/New-Kernel-Vul...04-and-10-10-255801.shtml , Oracle let lose this press release: https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/entry/rebootless_updates_now_available_for that they will continue to provide free use and updating service for the Ubuntu and Fedora distributions.

Been on Ubuntu a few years. Think it's pretty good. Not sure what your looking to get out of Linux but ubuntu seems to have allot of programs for it. I hear mint Linux uses less resources than ubuntu. Give one a shot to see if you like it.

I use Linux Mint on a few machines and I find it easy to use and trouble free. I have not had any trouble installing it. It is Ubuntu in a pretty user friendly wrapper.

Cheers

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

Project started a little early at 8 February 2012 at 23:46:25. Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit is running first. Based upon preliminary run times from the 10.04 32 bit version, this should take several weeks and FAAH, C4CW, HPF2 and HCC are the selected projects. Any repair units received will be processed normally without the repair unit "jumping ahead" of other WU's, unless otherwise directed by WCG requests or parameters.

Thought I would give an update on this ongoing project. It would appear each OS will take 4-5 weeks due to WU distribution, and underestimated run times. Here are the statistics as of 2/21/12:

I will advise when Ubuntu 11.10 test results are complete and begin the MS-Windows 7 64 bit test phase.

I am now at 97 HPF2 work units as the other three projects are over 100 valid results. However given the recent WCG upgrade and apparent BOINC credits no longer being computed the same way (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,32730) (item #2) it would appear these crunched results may not be valid as a comparison to Windows 7, which has yet to run.

I would start again this process again after the next upgrade to ensure nothing else would change after the fact, however my concern is the potential HCC project ending before this review is completed.

Hence my query:

1) Restart with the same projects (C4CW, HCC, FAAH, HPF2) or replace or just delete HCC. What other project should be used, if any?;
2) Discontinue the review; or
3) Any other ideas?

The computer will be in use either way and will not be "phased out" for awhile.

Comments?? I am open to discussion.

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

Some these upgrades have in no way affected any ACTUAL WU (adding lib or whatever), I would assume the experiment can continue.

Just points system and various "their side" tech upgrades right...?

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

Yes just server side updates, should make no impact on work units. I think a few tasks went missing or were resent during the upgrade, but apart from that, quirks really, well as far as we are concerned.

Re: Okay, I confez, I'm not a Linux Adapt.

RaymondFO, nothing has changed to the run times as basis of the comparative test, the credits just a side show.

--------

On the topic of Linux security, stumbled on this interesting GUFW/UFW setup guide of the Linux firewall. The configuration to let LAN traffic being open and Internet traffic filtered continues to be an issue, so this step-by-step gives good leads how to set this up with this simple [free] firewall that comes standard in the Ubuntu repositories.

http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/03/07/how-to-i...-on-linux-deepin-11-12-1/

The install is done on the Deepin Linux distro... it really needs some Secure network configuring. :D
