We have all but 1 result back from the first 30. This work unit is in a batch of 5 so we have sent 25 results back to the researchers server. I'm going to contact them shortly to see if they can create the next set of B's based on the type A's that have been returned to them. I do not know when we'll get these yet.
So, 50 work units sent 2 times each. So 100 possible work units for members to download since we're still waiting to send back 5 more type A's. We do not like sending out more copies than are needed. -Uplinger |

We do not like sending out more copies than are needed. If you had doubled or tripled the copies you sent last time you would have a full complement returned by now. That would have sped the project up. Another opportunity missed! ETA - Delayed [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Jun 3, 2010 7:30:49 PM] |

I did ask about it to get a responce and some opinions.
I can imagine that sending out more copies than needed wil speed things up, but also present us with some issues. You may get credit for the returned work, even if you are too late. But that is only a solution for the badge-hunters. I would be pissed if i found my contribution a wase of time and money. Or should we accept this kind of redudancy for small batches. Question: What is small, were do we draw the line. Is there another solution? Maybe a very short time to return the result, declaring no reply or finding user aborted and then sending a new copy. Will all this speed things up enough to be worth the trouble? Maybe its just a very clear policy: We do not like sending out more copies than are needed. I can live with that. Arnold. |

ETA - Delayed Well, if you consider to look at this the other side: Sending out more copies would: - use more processor time that would not be available to the other projects (kind of waste) - need more time to compare the copies - consume more bandwidth and storage to the grid servers And this is the only intermittent project at this moment and the researchers need their time to analyse the results

The tasks could have been sent out as high priority!
A task sent to you and 3 others would not significantly impact the others if you ran it before they even started it. This would have been the case with the yet unreturened tasks. A duplicated return is a confirmation, not a waste! A couple of lost hours by one or two crunchers vs thousands, work it out - If you can't, for small batches time is of the essence to a high power, and wasted time is cumulative. |

Although I have fared better than most on WU's for DDDT2 through active management, when they start to come every badge hunter will be training their sights on the project. Meanwhile there are PLENTY of other worthy projects to crunch, if every available active project already has a blue badge I pick one and target crunching another year on it in the meantime in case new badges come out someday, maintaining a slim cache for quicker response. I missed out on the original DDDT by not paying attention to the ending date and don't want that to happen to me again. It wasn't too long ago when a gold was as good as it got! All the WCG projects are worthy of our CPU time and some have a more personal meaning to an individual, as in my case. I am certain there will be enough WU for all soon, just keep on crunching!

The tasks could have been sent out as high priority! It seems that you have already forgotten that DDDT2 A-type WUs are sent with high priority. All this work minus 1 WU has been returned within days, so what do you expect? Anyway, the purpose of grid computing is to save years (and money) to researchers, not hours or even days. |

“Within days” Jean! Nice and vague.
I may be wrong about the 30drops priority, having remained dry, but more tasks ensure a faster return. An extra 30, 60 or 90 tasks would not have made much difference in terms of overall throughput, but would have sped the process up, you know, by days! Some of the last DDDT2 tasks I picked up sat for hours before they ran; can’t remember if they were Betas or normal tasks, it was so long ago, but either way they should have ran immediately. Some were server recalled from a 24/i7 system. w0en, Having reached 2years for all the presently running projects, I do the same as you; get a 3rd year, then a fourth and a fifth. If I ever get a full suite of 5years, I will just move on from there, as astrolab is doing, and go for 10years. As for the badges - I’m not that bothered if they take their time about it; we can DIY whatever badges we like into our signatures, |

“Within days” Jean! Nice and vague. Read back Uplinger's posts in this thread about this small distribution and watch their timestamps and you will see by yourself. From memory and the project stats I think at least 90 % had been returned within two days (50 % on the first day if I remember correctly). |

... I don't know what you and astrolab are using for your computers. It might be interesting to find out if you have them set up at home and if you have other, remote sites, contributing to the work you are doing. I have retired and am adding to my home, and I think it may be good for making plans as to what I want to do. For instance, regarding the power requirement needs, I am considering adding solar panels to the roof to help take care of some of that.Having reached 2years for all the presently running projects, I do the same as you; get a 3rd year, then a fourth and a fifth.
