Re: The are you my wingman and why is it taking you so long thread. clown

Although I haven't spotted it, if there's anyone out there who's still looking for the wingman of erlc_c027_ps0000_0--, it's me - and the WU has now passed the 50% mark. Thus, approximately another 28 hrs to go... cool

After that's completed, I'm estimating that I'll be something like 12 hrs away from my Bronze badge biggrin

"qb009761" It looks like you got a big chunk of these work units on a rather small cpu: -Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz . IMO would recommend a smaller chache

Re: The are you my wingman and why is it taking you so long thread. sleep

If everyone had used a setting of 0.1 days, All the results would have been back by the 18th or 19th!

Wrong, for one thing many probably uses the 60% default cpu-usage-setting, so they wouldn't return a 48-h-wu in 2 days, but instead use nearly 4 days.

Also, some doesn't run 24/7, adding even more time before returned.

And not to forget, not everyone is running WCG exclusively, so even with a 0,01 days cache-setting and running 100% cpu-usage and running 24/7 it can take close to 10 days to return a single wu.

Try some of that Maths.

Math can be interesting at times, so for anyone waiting on the wingman to return the result to reach the bronze, let's have a little fun with math. thinking

AFAIK there's only been 1000 DDDT-2 wu's released yet, this means 2000 tasks is issued with replication 2 tasks/wu.
According to BoincStats, WCG currently has... 197902 active computers, let's make it simple and say 200k.

200k computers and 2000 tasks means...
2000 tasks / 200000 computers = 0.01 task per computer...

Or, 1 of every 100 computers has got a DDDT-2 wu.

If each wu takes 48 - 96 hours cpu-time, let's use 2 days to make the numbers easy to follow...

For a Bronze, you'll need to return 7 results, if each takes 2 days.

With only 1 in 100 computers getting a DDDT-2, it therefore means anyone with a bronze-badge has... 700 computers running WCG. biggrin

Even if it's at the other extreme of 96 hours/task, it still means over 300+ computers to get the bronze. tongue

Well, the actual numbers will be lower, since if each task takes 96 hours cpu-time, and for anyone running with 60% cpu-usage, they won't get any DDDT2-work if they're running BOINC less than 17 hours/day.

Anyway, going by the announcement-message about DDDT2-wu-distribution and expected total work, the result are:
Type A: 1 task per 2.78 computers.
Type B: 1 task per 1.39 computers.
Type C: 110 tasks per computer.

Based on this, I would be really surpried if I manages getting a bronze-badge out of only the type-A-wu's. Much more realistic is to wait on the type-C before getting any DDDT2-badge. smile

txyankee, There is no way I would, nor ever will grab more WU's than my machine can handle. In all the years that I've been contributing, I've NEVER returned a WU after it's due date/time - which is more than can be said for the numerous reissues I've had to wait for in the past, due to my wingman's deadline having passed.

Edit, my machine managed to pick up 6 of these WU's - and whilst the first was running, the other core that this machine has, was clearing up some FA@H WU's that I had. Hence, the slight delay in not returning 2, then 2, and then the final 2 in close time intervals.

Re: The are you my wingman and why is it taking you so long thread. clown

Given the average run time for the morning session dropped from 48 hours yesterday to 39 hours got a pretty good idea what cruncher segment stocked up, it most certainly not those who were randomly multi-grid crunching having a client ask for 10 seconds of work and just sneaking 1 job to back-fill. Nearly 9x24 hours after lift-off we(me) thinks, therefor is (paraphrasing Jean Paul Sartre)

edit: 37 is 39 :D

What we need is a beta release to give us something else to obsess about!

Well, only one more validated today. sad This is ceasing to be humorus and starting to be irritating.

Exactly the same here. Yesterday still 13 in PV, today 12.
What are all the computers really doing out there?
Are there any crunchers that filled their bunkers more than they can cope with?

That's simple.

If one DDDT2 unit has been finished- *all other* WUs will get an update.
So like here, my uncrunched Rice-WUs got a boost from 7 hours to more than 12 hours to go.
What does the client?

Right!
The client hits the Panic-Button,switches from DDDT2 to Rice, because the Rice-WUs are high priority now until the ETA will get lower after upload of some Rice-WUs and the client assumes, that the other Rice will finish in time.

So with the time, the client resumes paused DDDT2-WUs again with one or more threads.
When the next DDDT2 WU finishes, the client again hits the Panic-Button and this all will take time.

Thanks for the update and good luck with the Bronze!!
