--- Yet would it take for this reason that all those who receive units have a faster computer (see the 80 hours of my T2050), everyone leaves the machine lit 24/24 7 / 7, weekends included, and especially as the machines accept units of 50 hours while the cache is set at 2.4 hours (2h 24 min). Also set 0.1 day cache is exposed to depleted units in case of interruption of Internet access or a server failure. In my case, failures and frequent stops for some servers (I'm not just the WCG) me to do a large cache if I want to prevent computers from ending up dry. |

If everyone had used a setting of 0.1 days, All the results would have been back by the 18th or 19th! If everyone set the cache to 10days, it would therefore take 8days longer. Of course not everyone leaves their computers on for 10days, so now it may take even longer, following the re-issue of timed out tasks. If everyone has a 10day cache for each round of the project, the effect is similar to interest on your bank balance - cumulative. Try some of that Maths. The thing is, math and predictions are never that simple. If everyone has a queue of 0.1 days and the servers go down for 18 hours how many years of science are subsequently lost? Likewise, if everyone has a cache of 10 days, BOINC has been programmed to finish the work in time if at all possible. The number of re-sent work units should not be any higher statistically no matter the cache. One must remember above all things, this is a distributed computing model. Speed is not its top benefit. If the scientists were so anxious to get the results back that quickly, they would never have committed them to the general population. Breath deeply and relax, nothing said here will change the timing or the results. Another problem I suspect happened to some, while waiting for launch, they run HCMD so they have a fairly rapid turn over of cache, which can cause the DCF (Duration correction factor) to deflate then when they got first few wu, system was estimating 20-30 hrs run time, so got more to fill cache, then as dcf reset what had started as 2-3 day cache ended up being 6-10

If the scientists were so anxious to get the results back that quickly, they would never have committed them to the general population. Speed IS a benefit, is cost prohibitive to build a 200,000+ core machine(s) for a single project/user. The tme to results is much shorter using distributed computing vs using normally avaliable systems for the type of projects we are doing, they would take 100 years or longer [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 24, 2010 3:32:31 AM] |

Just for the whinner, who will remain unnamed, I'm reseting my cache for 9 days from my 1 day... Hope I'm his wingman!

Still only 7 validated 5 pending and 1 error. All finished a while ago too. Crunching HCC.

Well, the queue adjuster (uplinger) advised that so far not a single set of 25 within the first 1000 A types is complete i.e. nothing ready to forward to the scientists to start reviewing and producing the 2 for 1 B Type.
----------------------------------------Officially now 7x24 hours in the air, my 1 of 8 validated, 7 in ram-shackles, has eaten me RAC which used to be near 2,100. It's lurking now at 1,760... it's only credit, wishing the sets would get completed. Those mosquitoes are certainly not on intermezzo.

Well said Sek. I have 16 validated and 11 still in PV jail. I hope this does not turn out to be the "2 days to run and 2 weeks to validate" project.
----------------------------------------I also have concerns about those who may be aborting them for long run times. Some projects outside WCG have both long and short running wu's within the same project. Some people routinely abort the long ones to get more short ones. In this case, aborting the A's would cause less B's & C's to generate. Oh well, mine will validate someday. As you said, Sek ... running this project really does affect personal stat's. |

There's an anti-cherry picking function, not sure how tight it's set though. It's a learning process for the WCG techs too as I read today.
