Re: Best linux package to use?

Bearcat,

What version of Ubuntu did you install? How did you try to install the agent? Can you try a fresh install of the agent, meaning you delete all the files in the data directory, especially the xml you modified? Then when that happens, please post the messages you are getting. These messages could be in your boinc agent or even in the system event logs. Messages make it easier to debug.

Did you know that if you have more than 3 Gigs of RAM running Ubuntu 32 bit, you should install the pae kernel? It will allow up to 16 GB of RAM. Only caveat is that you are limited to 2GB per process.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Re: Best linux package to use?

I will do a fresh install when this batch is done crunching on the winblows side. I used the ubuntu online installer so its the latest. Not sure if its 32 or 64 bit. Trying to find out but not familier with this OS. I have 4GB of ram now but wasnt planning on adding more since this is strictly a crunching machine.

Re: Best linux package to use?

Bearcat,
When you say you will do a fresh install are you talking of Ubuntu or only BOINC?
If it is Ubuntu make sure you get a 64-bit installer.
Then use Synaptic package manager to install BOINC. It will be version 6.4.5 but it will install correctly as a daemon (i.e. service) without unnecessary trouble except maybe the CA certificate problem, but this is a separate minor problem which can be fixed quite simply and quickly.
Later on you will be able to update BOINC to a more recent version with our help if you really want to, but it will be much easier. Or you will wait for Ubuntu 10.04 and see which version of BOINC goes with it then.

Once Ubuntu is re-installed and working you will find Synaptic under System->Administration.
Once Synaptic is up enter boinc in the quick search field, then select packages boinc-client and boinc-manager in the list and install. That's as simple as that.

Good luck. Jean.

Re: Best linux package to use?

I did try getting boinc from the package manager. I decided on getting the latest version so downloaded that myself. My guess on the online installer was 32 bit. Anyway to upgrade to 64 bit without total reinstall? If I reinstall ubuntu myself to 64 bit, will the package manager have the 64 bit version of boinc? Would prefer the 64 bit version since this pc has 2 quad core harpertowns in her.

Linux ubuntu 2.6.31-19-generic #56-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 28 02:39:34 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Guess its 64 bit if I am reading correctly.

Re: Best linux package to use?

You are correct, it should be 64 bit version of Ubuntu. If you type in

top

in the terminal, you'll be able to see memory usage near the top of that listing. It should show 4 GB of RAM.

(note: to exit 'top' all you have to do is press the 'q' (lowercase Q) button)

Re: Best linux package to use?

Thanks. The older version that the package manager has for download, is this a solid version of Boinc or should I use a newer version? Am a bit rusty on linux but can figure out what needs to be done if a newer version is better to use.

Re: Best linux package to use?

Well, if you're not wanting to use GPU, then the version in the Ubuntu package manager is good for you. That is the version that I use on all of my machines.
