Good day ladies and gentlemen,
----------------------------------------I have noticed a sequence of 3 messages which have been repeating now since the start of February in my log. The only change to the system running the boinc software in that time frame was a OS upgrade that occurred 4 days ago, but after the messages first started appearing in the log. These messages only occur in the WCG project, the other 3 projects attached to the same machine do not show any errors other then the occasional "Message from server: No work sent" statement from the SETI program. The machine is and has been a x86_64 only system for longer then the messages have been appearing in the log. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be and where I should start looking for the information or where the bad configuration is located as to prevent this error from occurring again? The messages are as follows: Tue 09 Feb 2010 04:40:35 AM EST World Community Grid Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Tue 09 Feb 2010 04:40:35 AM EST World Community Grid Requesting new tasks for CPU Tue 09 Feb 2010 04:40:40 AM EST World Community Grid Scheduler request completed: got 1 new tasks Tue 09 Feb 2010 04:40:40 AM EST World Community Grid Message from server: Resent lost result nd049_00011_16 Tue 09 Feb 2010 04:40:40 AM EST World Community Grid [error] App version has unsupported platform i686-pc-linux-gnu Tue 09 Feb 2010 04:40:40 AM EST World Community Grid [error] No application found for task: i686-pc-linux-gnu 603 ; discarding Here is the startup message block for the basic system information: Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Starting BOINC client version 6.10.17 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8g zlib/1.2.3 c-ares/1.5.1 Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Data directory: /home/jpdugan/boinc/BOINC Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Processor: 2 AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ [Family 15 Model 35 Stepping 2] Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Processor: 512.00 KB cache Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt lm 3dnowext 3dnow rep_good extd_apicid pni lahf_lm cmp_legacy Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST OS: Linux: 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64 Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Memory: 2.92 GB physical, 1023.99 MB virtual Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Disk: 19.69 GB total, 15.52 GB free Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Local time is UTC -5 hours Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 9500 GT (driver version unknown, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.1, 512MB, 86 GFLOPS peak) Mon 08 Feb 2010 11:52:41 PM EST Not using a proxy Thanks for any information you can pass along to help debug this problem, James P Dugan

Hi,
----------------------------------------In your sig On my desk, I have a workstation... Well, it seems so true in this case :O Saw that message several times in last week in different reports Tue 09 Feb 2010 04:40:40 AM EST World Community Grid [error] App version has unsupported platform i686-pc-linux-gnu No idea yet what this sudden behavioral change drives, but not surprised it will have been your client upgrade as tipping point. There's a file that holds the available platforms for WCG and other projects and somehow it's been blank for the WCG section for longer and currently being worked on. Berkeley is down, so can't give you the tag under which it's being fixed for the upcoming 6.10 release. The file all_projects_list.xml and there's a section for each project with the platforms. Mine has this in it, where yours might not? <project> <name>World Community Grid</name> <url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/</url> <general_area>Multiple applications</general_area> <specific_area>Humanitarian research on disease, natural disasters and hunger.</specific_area> ... <platforms> <name>i686-apple-darwin</name> <name>i686-pc-linux-gnu</name> <name>powerpc-apple-darwin</name> <name>windows_intelx86</name> <name>x86_64-pc-linux-gnu</name> </platforms>

Hi Sekerob,
----------------------------------------Thing is, the error message started to appear 3 days before the OS upgrade. I checked the all_projects_list.xml file and it does contain the section you mentioned. I am at work at the moment, tonight I will take a look at the link you posted and see if the fix locate there in might work. I'll update the thread when I know more. James

Check your data directory to see if there is a cc_config.xml file. If not, create the file and place it in your data directory. Your client messages indicate that would be /home/jpdugan/boinc/BOINC
----------------------------------------If there is a cc_config.xml file, add the following to the <options> section. <alt_platform>i686-pc-linux-gnu</alt_platform> If there is no cc_config.xml file, enter the following after creating the file: <cc_config> <options> <alt_platform>i686-pc-linux-gnu</alt_platform> </options> </cc_config> I don't know why it would suddenly start with this message, but hopefully the above will fix it. Let's hope it's that one, the original thread discussing this option going back to 2007 and since barely coming up.

BobCat13,
----------------------------------------I checked and found the file you indicated was missing. After creating the file and its contents, I started boinc, which has now successfully communicated with the server and started working on a work unit again without the error message. Not sure how that file disappeared or why, but having it fixes the problem. Thank you for your assistance in getting my system crunching numbers again. Sekerob, Thank you very much for your help through all this. James P Dugan

That cc_config.xml file actually does not exist by default, which makes it all the stranger. What client version?
----------------------------------------Anyhow, great you're crunching and thanks to BobCat13... worthy of a new FAQ.
