Best linux package to use?

Looking for information on which linux disto has the least headache to use. From what I have read so far on the threads, seems ubuntu is fairly painless to migrate to. This will be going on a dual quad core (harpertown) pc I built. Currently using win 7 64bit RC1 but don't plan on buying it. Not bad OS but ready to switch. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: Best linux package to use?

Bearcat, are you looking for the best, most convenient 'through GUI' control?

Frankly, till now I'm superbly satisfied with W7-64 HP. Definitely worth my money.

Re: Best linux package to use?

Bearcat, I am rather happy with Ubuntu 64-bit (currently 9.10) but honestly I have never tried another distro. I am using it since 8.04 if I remember well and I have never had any major problem.
Good GUI, seriously and simply maintained and upgraded and if you have Windows partitions that you wish to keep it reads and writes NTFS and FAT without trouble.

I installed it in dual boot over an XP 32 and I can use my OpenOffice files and manage my mail (with Thunderbird) from both sides.

It needs a bit of learning when you start to want to tweak things your way, but I think it would be the same (or worth maybe) with other distros.

Good luck. Jean.

My experience with Ubuntu is the same as Jean - it's pretty fool-proof.

Re: Best linux package to use?

Ubuntu hands down.
I use Ubuntu everyday on my work computer and my home computer and I would not change that for nothing.
Don't buy windows, its a waste of money.

Got Ubuntu up and running. Boinc is running but getting errors stating app version not supported. I am on version 6.10.17. Any suggestions?

Re: Best linux package to use?

Think it was BobCat13 who reminded me few days ago of the solution for:

[error] App version has unsupported platform xxxxxxxxxxxxx

if that is what you're talking about... guessing with the limited amount of info provided.

see the post by knreed here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,18901_offset,0#154794

edit: also, knreed just posted here

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...28438_lastpage,yes#267572

to confirm, if this is the exact problem, that there's a fix in the alpha client 6.10.33. Wait till the formal recommended release is out or apply the cc_config.xml work around referenced above.

Re: Best linux package to use?

I did apply the cc work around. Got the ca certificate error. Shut it down and fired up winbloze to crunch another batch. Lost 2 days fiddling with this. I'll give it a shot when this batch gets crunched. Thanks for the help.

Re: Best linux package to use?

Bearcat,

that's why we ask always to post the messages to not leave us guessing. The ca-bundle.crt problem is an entirely different / additional one you get, but at least it confirms the client is now being recognized with the correct platform info. Some Linux distro's do not install this properly or completely omit it. There are different ca-bundle messages, so look in the FAQ index for the one applying to you and use the recommended way to fix.

Re: Best linux package to use?

This new error didn't come up until I applied the cc fix. Found the fix but wasn't quite sure how to do it. Hopefully the newer version of boinc will correct the fix. I just got a message about RC1 from winbloze to upgrade or delete it. Its not a real bad OS but not worth paying for it.
