Yeah, but...
----------------------------------------There are small businesses too, and even family businesses! So where do you draw the line? Corporations, Ltd. companies, self employed, over 10 computers, 50, 100...? I think it is better to leave the door open to all. I liked the idea of people create Family Teams (with different members having their own ranks, and perhaps living in different countries too, so I created a team and added myself and now one another)! As well as being something new for the social sciences to yak on about (social aspects of Crunching in disparate family circles) it is a good recruitment method that most people could initiate. Teams Smith and Jones would go rather quickly! I am not sure if you can change your team name here or if you need to go through deed pole (depole)? Anyway, might make for a good new (or reborn) thread! Snuck into UK 59th overall points today (12,352,304). But still on page 3 for total run time, and way done p2 for results returned ![]() I will be happy enough when I get into the top 50 for points (first page) ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Jan 23, 2010 2:56:59 PM] |

It is a difficult topic. Where to draw the line or how to define FAMILY and PRO.
---------------------------------------- One possibility is to have the definition as geographical. Are eligible as FAMILY all machines (for playing or professional use) that are in your home the place where you live. If you have multiple homes where you live part time they could comply too. That should simplify a lot things. ![]() |

Most self employed people would use any computers they have for both work and personal interests. Mind you, someone that is self employed is not going to have 50 computers, so they are not going to make a mockery of the contribution tables! So if a computer was at home and also used for personal use that would be good enough.

Those having let's say one computer used for work or personal at home, will anyway find themselves better ranked and more fairly ranked in the FAMILY table than in the global table with the PRO's. ![]() |

I have always thought that a bit of industrial cometition could lend significant support to the WCG.
Ideally, Intel, AMD, and various computer manufacturers could fight it out to be at the top of the Professional IT Manufacturers Team list. I would rather they did this than see who could break the 7GHz barrier using liquid Nitrogen - which is a bit like seeing who has the fastest car, even though they are not road worthy. |

I am not sure that having the fastest CPU in terms of frequency relates into having the highest performing one.
----------------------------------------Over the years we have seen CPU's that at the same frequency are more performant. First by improving the design, how instructions are handled (ex. prediction), number of instructions per clock cycle, multiple threads or not, cache memory, the memory interconnection and bandwith and also by multiplying the cores. So what is the most interesting race: Ghz or Linpack type benchmarks, or number of instructions/sec or whatever else. There are so many possibilities. But if you take a given CPU model and you double the frequency (if it can hold that without melting) then you double the performance as long as you stay in the cache. Maybe the race should be in relative form. The manufacturer which CPU (whatever model) can improve it's stock performance by the highest factor wins. Too easy. Unfortunately I suspect that to satisfy the public which has becomed used to some straightforward overclocking, the manufacturers rate artificially low their CPU's. So again hard to say how fair the competition would be. Not easy. ![]() ![]() |

I think you may have missed my point, but caught on about the CPU speed
![]() I was saying that they would be better off contributing here, in a crunching competition with lots of systems, than competing for the highest frequency in one off staged events that are actually meaningless. |
