Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

I will run one i7 950 with HT on and one with HT off at the same memory and CPU frequency.
Interesting! I love this test. applause
I bet on the HT machine. 30 to 60 % more HCC WUs per day? smile

I'd love to see that too... it may be different for different projects, so you may want to run head to head for specific projects to see if some get more out of HT than others. If anyone has any hints, I could do the same with a couple of my systems since they are identical... but It's non-trivial to pull the stats and results on my account thinking

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

For me HCC is perfect for such a test. It is the project with the most consistent durations and it is the project I used when doing similar tests with my P4 HT. However, over time the average duration may change slightly from one batch to another, therefore it is nice that you can run the comparison in real time, i.e. receiving WUs from the same set in both machines.

You could run a similar test on one of the Autodock no-redundancy projects like HFCC or FAAH, but since the WUs are less consistent you would have to also use credits to compare daily productions and then the comparison begins to be less fair. Because it is known that the benchmark in the HT machine is not completely reflecting the loss of speed due to hyperthreading and, thus, the HT client is claiming more credits than it fairly should.

MrKermit,
I wrote my previous post thinking it was for Hypernova and I thought "OK, it's non trivial and it could (should?) be made easier but it still doable." smile

Obviously with your numbers it is more challenging but if you use one specific device profile for the pair of nodes doing the test and if you use the device filter of the Results Status page that should not be too difficult (although slower than it should with a little help from our dear techs smile ).

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

Ok the past buffers will be empty by day end so tomorrow will be the first day of parallel crunching. We will wait until Sunday to get a first statistically sound result.

These are two identical rigs (really identical in all components, everything, case, disk, Ram, board, graphic card, power supply, RW CD/DVD etc. etc..) with i7 950 CPU crunching at 3.66 Ghz with 6 GB DDR3 ram at 1.6 Ghz 8-8-8-24. OS is W7 64 bit and Boinc is version 6.10.18. Same software config, same drivers.
The machines are full standalone with continuous connection to WCG and crunch full time with a 1 day buffer.

The units will be validated automatically. Depending on the project you are running, you may have to wait for other users to return their units.

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

nono44 I suppose that you mean the status that appears in Boinc task manager. In fact it is a two step event.
Step 1 the completed WU which has a 100% completed status will be automatically uploaded to WCG server according to your configuration, and availability of the internet connection.
If you want to speed up the upload then you can go to the project list, select WCG project and press the update button. You will see that the WU in the task list will disappear. Look also at the messages list to see what you boinc manager does.
Once the WU is received by WCG it will be into a Pending Validation status or Validation en Attente in french or similar. At that point you will have to wait that the replicated WU's are also returned until the quorum is reached and then your WU will be validated. It can take some time even a few days.
Please go and read the FAQ Startup Forum Index

https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,21501

and give a thorough look at it. There will be a lot of informations available able to answer many of your questions. But if you do not find the answer then post into the Forum Boinc Agent Support or Website support or other according to the problem you have. smile

Strictly speaking the upload of results is done immediately after the computation is complete if network is available. It is only the reporting that the process is complete which is deferred until the next request for new work.

Ooops! missed this little detail. Sorry for that.

nono444 still check your network availability settings to be sure all is according to your wishes.
