Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

Fantastic setup. I love your concept. You are a very dedicated cruncher. love struck

I too had a Mercury and Pluto, but they no longer work. Maybe I'll get them working again when I get motivated. The computer I am using now is named Mars. peace

Cheers coffee

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

The incredible sustained performance of the 980X chip which is now on three days average sustained at clearly over 50k ppd, has me reported sine die the dual socket RA device. I have decided to better invest the amount of such a high perf dual socket rig into one new single new socket device (ERIS) with 980X and revamp other devices with the same chip. In fact I probably can buy 4 X 980X for the price of a full fledged dual socket based on X5860 chips. The points per dollar ratio leaves no discussion. biggrin
Movieman I am sorry sad not to pursue at least for some time the dual socket rig, but here I probably made a more business like decision then an emotional one. Anyway the target is now to try to pull the maximum out of my complete system now made of 8 planets + 3 dwarf planets.

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

Let me share some picture about my system (enjoy):

First the spaceship Nostromo main computer room (this may sound familiar to some of you)

You have all planets except for JUPITER and URANUS that are in other rooms as they are used also for other work.

One example of my planetary devices, here is PLUTO badged accordingly to Sek's proposal of latest Hubble Pluto photos. Each device has it's own wireless usb stick on top to connect with a wireless network which is on fast cable connection to internet.

Example of display for the Mars device:

The DVI Multiplexers which allow me to manage up to 8 Desktops with one display, keyboard and mouse.

Here are some example of the badges which are attached on each device:

And this is an essay for the future RA device's badge:

Now I am impressed....and no, I'm not showing pics.. biggrin
and for your comment above about being sorry, don't.
I've always said the single sockets were the best bang for the buck so you made the right decision.
I just like the dualies but that's the heart speaking not the head.
wink

Coming from you Movieman it is a compliment I appreciate. Thank's. smile
I will try to have over the week end to update the pics with the complete computer room of the Nostromo and all badges. It is now full wall to wall with 9 nodes. When I shot the first picture they were 7.

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

I have good news. The new dwarf planet ERIS is now in orbit and has already started sending WU's since last night and during the day the first validated ones have been registered. smile

ERIS has in its core a solid nucleus made by an unknown material called ci7950. The spectral emission is at a wavelength of 3.6 Ghz with RAM emitting at 1.6Ghz. It's orbit crosses at the moment a few debris from the comet DDDT2, and thick clouds of material from comets HCC, HFCC, FAAH, HCMD2. biggrin

ERIS is the solar systems largest dwarf planet as it is larger than PLUTO.
It was considered the 10th planet before UAI redefined what a planet and dwarf planet is. According to the new classification PLUTO lost its planet status.

The ERIS device badge:

And now the Nostromo computer room in its final status :

Clever -- I like it. smile

Are you sure? Besides technology upgrades, there's bound to be a dwarf planet or two discovered in our solar system during the next few years.

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

darth vader, yes I know that there are already two other recognized dwarf planets (size smaller than Mercury is dwarf), MAKEMAKE and HAUMEA at this time. SEDNA is in debate yet as it is not clear if it has a size and mass that allows for a gravity strong enough to have a round body. Is it also a Kuiper belt object or Oort object. There are difficulties to estimate the real size. Maybe in 2075 when it will be nearest to the Sun we may see better with more powerful telescopes.
My problem here is that the setup you see in the pic already goes wall to wall. I cannot tear down the walls. Btw you do not see all planets there (only 9 out of 11), two of them are in other places in my home because they are also used for work. If I stick all the cases together I can make space for one additional rig in the same row. But If I do that I will heave cooling problems and I would need to pull a new additional power line in that small room. On the side of this small room from which I took the picture with a 12mm very wide angle lens (otherwise no way, I have only one meter distance) the space is used by my wife, and the place is full of stuff up to the ceiling.
Ideally I should throw everything out and use all the volume, pull in two other power lines, install air conditioning and have a proper personal data-center room. There would be in theory space and energy enough for a total of 36 units in a comfortable way.

Who knows maybe one day when kids will start flying out of the nest I may get some more space. biggrin

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

Hypernova,

X-posting, so we can leave the DDDT-2 Completed tasks run time "On-topic"... which is near impossible on our forums ;>)

You might want to test with two of your identical quad HT for a week and see how many results of for instance HCC you get completed with and without HT. Comment from MrKermit too makes me think you might get more work done, and the price of less recorded Run time, but what's important?

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

Ok Sek. I will do that. I have already two running only HCC (I already wanted to see the new WU what are they worth) but all with HT and the two processors are not identical. But I will arrange that.
I will run one i7 950 with HT on and one with HT off at the same memory and CPU frequency.

Re: The Solar System Initiative - SSI

I'm sure that Sedna's status will be settled well before 2075. When the JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) is launched in 2014, or there about, Sedna will almost certainly be observed in some detail soon after on orbit checkout is complete.

Thanks for sharing the details of your systems. This has been an interesting thread.
