Hey gang. The jury is still out on the HPF2 testing but I ran 22 of the current work units without issue using Vista Ultimate 64 along with BOINC 6.6.38 (64bit) on my Core2Quad 9450. I wonder if there is another batch of work units that will fail though ![]() I have two core 2 duos 6600 that quit on me, what ticks me off is that they cant be upgraded--I may go for a couple i7s Hum. Well, you could just get the Mobos, processors, memory (ddr3) and ....I don't know.... PSUs? That should save some. The I7 920s (like mine) should be the cheaper of the I7s now and they do crank out a ton of work. ![]() OK.. I just put this same version of BOINC on my Windows 7, I7-920. I downloaded 48 of the HPF2 WUs so we will see how these go. Oh.. as far as I can tell, the I7 860s are as cheap or cheaper than the I7 920s and so ... were it me, I would go with the 860 rather than the 920 (although my 920 runs great). Note..The 860s are 75watts while the 920 is 135 and the reduction of one memory path seems to make no discernable difference. (Who would have thought....?) ![]() |

(Who would have thought....?) ![]() I really like the idea of 75 watts as our electric company recently increased 19 percent--i will look this weekend to see what i can find on the cheap what is the deal with the memory path---when i got those two machines they were 1600 apiece from Vision computers in Atlanta just for the grid. Snip snip OK.. (Who would have thought....?) ![]() I really like the idea of 75 watts as our electric company recently increased 19 percent--i will look this weekend to see what i can find on the cheap what is the deal with the memory path The I7 920 has a triple-channel memory link giving incredible memory bandwidth. I am not sure why but the 8xx chips dropped back to 2-channel memory links. Now there is some speculation that if you are gaming and need extreme graphics bandwidth, then you might get 5% more with the 920. But... Since the 860 is clocked at 2.8GH and the 920 is clocked at 2.66GH it looks to me like the 860 would be the better cruncher (especially when you are running 8 WUs at once). Additionally it has to do with "Turbo mode on the 920 is 2.93Gh while the "Turbo mode" on the 860 is 3.46GH" I just told you more than I know I am no expert on this but everything I have read leads me to that same conclusion. One here. As you will likely notice, the I7 975 is the strongest but it costs something close to 4 times what the 920 and 860 cost. Were I able to buy another now, I would likely go for the 860 in the most stripped down Dell I could get it in. I hate it that daddyo was with us but one day. I wonder why. Did we lose another one day wonder?Where is the loyalty in this world today--i lived in Connecticut until i was 14 and was a Red Sox fan.Back then a player would stay with a team and it was almost like family.Nowadays even here on WCG they will jump from team to team No loyalty |
