Merry Christmas! Hope you all are doing well! Got the new 80 core V4 Broadwell and a 48 core V2 Ivy Bridge up and running. Windows don't take to kindly to anything over 64 cores (wont spread WUs evenly) so had to split it into two VMs. Decided Threadripper is just too much. The 128 thread is expected out next month at $5000+ just for the CPU. Smh Have you looked into NUMA and running 2 instances of BOINC or considered Linux. I know windoze only has 64 memory channels and chokes on machines with more threads. Linux should be able to handle it.

Yes, I tried running Linux (Ubuntu) and it can handle it fine but its not as nice and is slower than Windows for the WCG project I am running right now (MIP). Also MIP crashes with errors if I try and run two instances due to memory conflicts. I tried to get them to run on separate NUMAs but it kept giving me the same errors. I read others were having the same issues with MIPS, it doesn't play nice with multiple instances.
I have NUMA on and the two VMs are assigned to their own NUMA and restricted to it but VMs impose a penalty but its still faster than Linux. I was going to try and compile Linux but couldn't get it to work. The last time I did that (over a year ago) it made it just as fast as Windows. Definitely open to suggestions. I can't believe this day and age that Windows can't handle more than 64 threads! |

Ain't that the truth! I still have two 8 cores I run but their days are numbered. Only a matter of time before they are gone.

I can't believe this day and age that Windows can't handle more than 64 threads! What about their enterprise versions? I would think that in a corporate environment it would have to be able to handle more than 64.

Good point. Don’t know about newer versions but I have 2012 Data Center and it has the same issue as Windows 10.

I downloaded Clear Linux which is optimized for Intel processors (if you meet specs). Boinc is available in their "app store" but it doesn't work until you enter a command in the terminal to fix a setting. Only been running it a little over a day but its returning numbers very similar to Windows 10 with VMs. There is potential it will get faster but at the very least it will use all cores correctly. It has some extra tools to, Htop in terminal is nice and provides resources usage. Its also customizable.

Now you won't have to deal with the lack of memory channels in windoze and the hassle of running 2 VMs. ![]()
