Whether 2.01 or 0.01 days, the frequency of work requests does not change. But if you have a 2.0 day buffer and the Beta WU is issued with a 2 day return, you are not going to get any Beta because your actual buffer is more likely 2.2 days Got an official reference for that astrolab/rilian? Let me example. I run a client with 8 days cache. I've got several projects attached to that client, one of them having a 3 day deadline. Will I get work from that project when long term debt says the project is due crunch time and will they be automatically prioritized?

So you set option to receive WUs only for that project, and check off "get wus from other projects" 2) it depends.. but server could reply smth like "there are WUs but your computer cannot finish them in time bla bla" and send 0 wus |

the bla bla I think only happens when the computer is over-committed, meaning there's work in the cache that is all due before the X day deadline.
----------------------------------------Anyway, I happened to increase my cache when noticing a beta in queue that arrived all by itself last weekend and incremented the cache from 2.5 to 2.7 and got another beta, so let's put the question to the techs. The less fiddling and unscheduled client contacting, the better for the server loads and having the correct information promotes that.

Got an official reference for that astrolab/rilian? Fair question. No. If you can answer these questions then all of us will have the official reference. If a client can pick a Beta WU, will the scheduler send the Beta WU to that client if it has to run it in High Priority? Will the scheduler ever choose to send a Beta WU to a machine running normal priority rather than a machine that would need Hi Priority? When issuing a Beta WU, does the scheduler totally ignore the client buffer size? Is the scheduler only concerned with whether that client can return the Beta WU on time, knowing that Hi Priority can be used? If the single core client has a WU already running another WU in Hi Priority, will the scheduler send it a Beta WU that also must be run in Hi Priority? Since the scheduler is software, we know that there are only Yes/No answers to each question, but someone has to know the answer if we are to be informed. |

Hi all,
----------------------------------------as I mentioned in a post months ago, which I can't find anyway, is my humble opinion that WCG would include Beta WU's in the same check box page of all projects, and not in a separate page like is provide today. I think that active members, have the capacity and knowledge to manage yours personal preferences, including for Beta WU's, and would have the possibility to receive just Beta WU's for a moment or not, like any other WU's from any other project in WCG. I don't saw any convincent reasons or special disclaimers to separate Beta WU's preferences, like we have in a separate check box page from other projects (despite of the possibility to have distinct requirements and disclaimers to run Beta WU's, which need be explaned in the respective field besides the check box . Maybe WCG could insert Beta WU's check box, under the My Projects profiles, like other check boxes that we have today (see both below): ( ) If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project. ( ) Please opt me in to new projects as they become available.
Cheers ! GIB@

I think that we already have more than enough crunchers trying to get Beta WU. I know that the Beta WU are getting returned to the server quite quickly, thereby fulfilling the needs of the Scientists and Techs.
I dont see the need to have someone spend time moving a check box to a different page. Sorry. |

You make moving a check box sound harder than it is..

i think "participate in beta" checkbox is not moved on the main projects page because Beta WUs may crash computer/dont bring points/etc and this may make some volunteers angry

Hi all: In 3 years I received 9 Beta WU - by setting my cache to 0.1 days, I have received 6 in the last 24 hours.

As suggested there are ways to increase your chances of getting a Beta WU but there are no guarantees. I had 8 C2D machines all identically configured and all reliable (no errors for over a month) and only 3 got a Beta WU. That is why it is hard to get a Beta Badge. Even if you have good timing and the right configuration, you still need some luck to get the right configuration at exactly the right time. I agree. I've been signed up for Beta testing for over a year now with 11 cores running continuously and I've only had nine days worth of beta's. It doesn't seem to make any difference what you set your cache to, its just luck whether a client request for more tasks coincides with the servers having Beta units ready to send out. I will admit having a quad core does help though as it requests work more frequently than my other computers. |
