Re: CUDA device help

Seti workunits are shorter, they should be done in a few hours on your card. And the system is working slower, so I deactivate "use GPU while computer is in use".

Re: CUDA device help

Thanks for stating this more precisely. Before buying the card I checked Nvidia's own list which is very general at:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_learn_products.html
Fortunately the card's sole purpose was not to CUDA-crunch but to fit into a HP SFF desktop that is not easy to restock due to the format constraint. The card is low profile and passively cooled which makes it a good find.
I'll stay with the WCG assuming that time will bring more improvements in efficiency...

If you are interested in additional BOINC points, you can use your card under CUDA. If you run at least BOINC 6.6, it will have minimal impact on CPU and still run WCG.

I am running an 8400 GS, under BOINC 6.6, with WCG and SETI. I have SETI set to only send CUDA capable work units so it does not interfere with WCG. I get an additional 100 BOINC points per day, so I am not sure it is worth it.

By the way, I also have a GTX 260 running WCG and GPUGRID. It is generating an additional 20,000 BOINC points a day, under CUDA/GPUGRID with minimial impact on WCG. That is worth it.

One day, WCG will support CUDA, and I can double my contribution to WCG.

Re: CUDA device help

With a GTX 260 you're already in other spheres... why not try a Nvidia TESLA!? Does anybody among the crunching fellows out there use this kind of heavy artillery?

Actually I have a GTX 295 on backorder from Dell. They had it on sale with discounts and coupons for $340 for a day and I could not pass it up. I still wonder if I will ever really get it becasue it was ordered 3/24 and they pushed the ship date out twice, now scheduled for 4/24.

I am thinking that that should generate more than twice the work of the GTX260.

Re: CUDA device help

Fortunately BOINC is an excellent pretext for unrestraint computer soup up...

Re: CUDA device help

@BertrandRussel

for a 8400GS I recommend running folding@home in addition to BOINC because this is a health project like so many here at WCG.
(I do so with a 9800 GTX+ card at the moment).

But take care to download the right client for GPU work units.
And be aware of a hot graphics card! wink

(In case you want further info, please send me an email.)

Re: CUDA device help

Danke, Dieter, für Ihren Tip. Vielleicht wage ich mich mal an ein anderes Projekt über das WCG hinaus - nach über zwei Jahren Rechnerei wäre etwas Abwechslung willkommen.
