CUDA device help

Hi,
I recently upgraded the graphics card on one of my machines with a new NVIDIA 8400GS - it's a CUDA capable device.
BOINC does recognize the feature on start by stating:
"CUDA device: GeForce8400GS (driver version 18250 CUDA version 1.1, 512MB, est. 4 GFLOPS)."
OK so far. I would be pleased to know how to benefit from this capability. As for now I don't see any improved calculation performance on this PC.
Thank you for any help/advice.

Re: CUDA device help

Hello Bertrand,

You have to attach your BOINC to a project that supports CUDA devices.

WCG, as of now, does not.

Mille grazie, Flavio.
Is there a roadmap for CUDA integration in the WCG?

Re: CUDA device help

Hello BertrandRussel,
WCG does not have any projects that use CUDA. GPUGRID in Barcelona does ( http://www.gpugrid.net/ ). So does SETI and Folding@Home. Look over the forum messages on GPUGRID. You may recognize some of the names.

Lawrence

Added: One WCG project is looking into coding a CUDA version. This is uncertain until they get it debugged. It is not trivial. So there is no road map.

Re: CUDA device help

If we currently participate in any projects available, this one should be downloaded and started automatically? Also, assuming a quad core already running 4 tasks in parallel, will we now be working on 5 (ie, will the BOINC client recognize this situation and keep the CPU completely utilized)?

Re: CUDA device help

CUDA tasks cause major problems for those running them, so it is not enabled by default.

GPU tasks also use CPU resources.

6.6.20 is the current version and it will run 4+1 with GPU using ~0.2% of one core.

Cheers

Re: CUDA device help

The amount of CPU power used for the GPU task is entirely dependent on the application.

If I have understood this correctly, the use of CPU cores in CUDA work units depend more on how well those work units are coded, than the client itselft. Gpugrid got their wu's running smoothly two or three months ago, so I would expect much higher CPU load when new CUDA project arrives to WCG. If or when they arrive smile

True and on the BOINC release. I'm only at GPUGrid and it is constant ... that is if you can believe the number. biggrin
