Hi, I am new to this forum but 'very old' with WCG and BOINC/SETI. I actualy have a CUDA m/c and it just smashes the wu that are run with the GPU. The interresting argument here, is whether or not using CUDA the projects could benefit (run faster) and the benefits of these projects become available to the world faster. The points is an extra! I agree, the points are not really the most important point but a side effect for crunching WU's faster ...Personally I would like to see BOINC/projects to support the OpenCL more than the CUDA as the ATI is releasing new monster's in a short time and it might be so that the future for the ATI/OpenCL is more "brighter" than the NVidia's ( more propriatory maybe? ) CUDA? I realize that the OpenCL will need more effort from the whole crew but hopefully it would be more productive in the future '-- Lundi -- ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by JEklund at Aug 28, 2009 7:19:48 PM] |

What about an IPhone Ap? If I had one, I would leave it charging all night when not in use just to crunch. Or, how about Android since it is getting sluggish adoption. Many cell phones have more power then a few of the PC dinosaurs that are running in the garage.

For the iPhone, it has been mentioned previously, and it is said that it doesn't really worth it: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ad,23095_offset,20#227569 And I guess other PDA phones are more or less the same. |

I see a few folks have gotten the intent of my original post. For the rest, I was making fun of the incessant (and already answered many times) questions regarding CUDA and the like. Answered ad nauseum. No one ever uses the SEARCH feature on the top right... ![]() I used to use it for finding whether links have already been posted. Now, it's rather hard to find. |

I realize that the OpenCL will need more effort from the whole crew but hopefully it would be more productive in the future '-- Lundi -- ![]() Difficult enough to rewrite the memory-hungry BOINC applications to use CUDA that you aren't likely to find many BOINC projects that do it. I have found two projects so far that at least make use of CUDA: GPUGRID http://www.gpugrid.net/ Doesn't appear to have started with an especially memory-hungry algorithm. Yoyo@home http://www.rechenkraft.net/yoyo/ Doesn't make it obvious they can use a GPU. On another subject, don't expect much OpenCL use in BOINC projects before BOINC 6.8.* passes testing enough for widespread use; it finally supports OpenCL. |

Up for this topic.
----------------------------------------I saw on my log this message: 10/1/2009 1:08:26 PM World Community Grid Requesting new tasks for GPU but, of course, I got no gpu tasks. But... is this project thinking about gpu's? Or it's just a strange message? I'm using 6.6.38 BOINC and a 9800 GTX. ![]() |

If you use 6.6 clients and up you'll see this message every 7th day as the client will keep checking until you disable the GPU function in the client. Cannot be done on the website device profiles as yet.
----------------------------------------edit: WCG sends clients who ask for GPU work a back-off message to check again in 7 days, until one day there will be one in an unknown future. Before the 6.6+ client would check every contact with the servers creating unnecessary messages

Before the 6.6+ client would check every contact with the servers creating unnecessary messages Not exactly correct... 1: All clients gets the <cuda_backoff> and <ati_backoff> with 1-week duration from WCG on every scheduler-request, regardless of asks for work or not. Even the old v5.10.45-clients gets this message. 2: Only v6.10.6 and later clients understands the backoff, and won't try asking for GPU-work for the next week. 3: Since WCG currently asks all clients to re-connect every 2 days, for v6.10.6 and later clients the GPU-deferrals will never time-out, so won't normally ask for GPU-work at all... 4: Except, if user manually hits "update", the deferrals is zeroed, so client can ask for GPU-work in these instances... Any CUDA-capable computers running v6.6.xx will after some time use upto a 1-day deferral for asking CUDA-work, since doesn't understand the <cuda_backoff> from project. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Sort of not important. Only 6.4 and up asks for GPU work, obviously the servers not preoccupied with the version that calls in. Yes the Update button operation overrides counters, so it's perfectly logical it would do so for the GPU timer too coupled to the GPU scheduler. That's not new. Who knows, will there soon be 2 buttons... give me CPU work, give me GPU work all for the sake of userfriendly and more wheels to spin and break. There's lots of that since only the doctor seems to have the full map in his head. Now a good organization has something called "succession planning". What happens if the Doctor HFB is hit by a truck? Today I read the lament of there only being 100 registered alpha testers, some not interested in reporting bugs because them being ignored. Well the October annual meeting is coming soon. Hope it shakes some houses... it needs some.
