If even some portion of this .... gets installed on a Dell, it would certainly make it easy for me to choose another vendor. Just look at the hours it would take just to decide whether to use this software. Volunteer Tourism? Self Sustainable Apartments? Never mind the hours to get rid of it.

I am sure some of this is valuable work, but pre-installed on every Dell computer??? Even Dell can't be serious about selecting projects based on popularity.

Re: Dell Social Innovation Competition

They are looking for business plans, not stuff to preinstall.

I wasn't too impressed with their voting system. It's not like anything I've ever seen, and I can't see any way that it is remotely unbiased. Oh well - they aren't really bothered about the public vote, the competition judges have an overwhelming majority vote....

I expect the judges foresee a high drop-out rate when it comes to submitting a venture plan and video before the next round.

Note that even if the World Community Grid entry were to win, Dell aren't obliged to actually help in any way.

No, unfortunately not... sad

Congratulations Semifinalists!
Out of the 527 ideas submitted, 100 ideas have been selected to move forward and compete in the next round of the competition. The semifinalists are listed below alphabetically until voting resumes, then the order will be determined by votes. The semifinalist list is the combination of the top 25 ideas voted by the public plus 75 projects selected by the judges.

Voting Resumes!
Voting on the second round of competition is now open. Voting on Round 2 extends to April 21. We will add the semifinalists’ videos after April 6 to give you more information in making your selection. Remember – you can vote on as many projects as you like, but only one vote per project!

Thing is, I've only seen 99 - so, unless I've made a mistake (quite probably - I'll go back and check later), there's 1 missing...

It appears as though there were two ideas that were very similar;
Lighting Africa using dirt
Lighting Africa With Dirt-Powered Batteries
and it appears as though these 2 were merged - and thus, the reason for only 99 entries listed in the "Semi-Final" pages on their website...
