The semifinalists are selected by combining the top 25 ideas voted most popular by the public and up to 75 additional ideas chosen by the judges. The semifinalists write a venture plan and post a 3-minute video pitch of their idea.
Round 2

The second round of voting ends at 5:00 P.M. CST (23:00 UTC) on April 21. Watch the video pitches and decide who moves to the final round of the competition.

Grid computing technologies have already been widely developed, capable of combining the computational power of many individual PC's into being an enormously powerful computational think-tank.

The World Community Grid (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/) is one such (non-profit) grid computing organization that accepts non-profit computational research projects from research groups around the world. The major focus of the research projects accepted are large-scale searches for cures to major human diseases, as well as other important goals such as searching for cleaner energy-producing materials and methods.

Modern medicinal discoveries often employ a technique called "Rational Drug Design" involving understanding the structures of proteins or other molecules that could serve as potential drug targets to cure a disease. This type of drug development then makes use of significant amounts of computation time to be able to screen through molecules that are appropriate for interacting with the target molecule. Grid computing technologies are therefore well-tailored to this type of humanitarian medicinal research.

What could be done to assist these existing computational technologies is to pre-install the operating systems of computers sold by major distributors with the safe software from World Community Grid, which to the home PC user behaves simply as a screen saver. The software is entirely noninvasive to one's computer usage, taking advantage of only unused, idle computer time to donate more power to these types of computational medicinal discoveries. Everyone's PC can be contributing to the search for cures for major diseases, by this simple software addition to new PCs greatly expanding the power of this grid computing network.
