Where should I go in Florida?

Hi All

My wife and I are going to be going to Orlando in April with our son, my Brother-in-Law and his 3 children. My brother-in-law's kids are keen on doing all the Disney parks, but we've done many of them when we went to Florida a few years ago and our son is still too young to really appreciate them. Although we will be doing some parks, we're keen to do some exploring and do some different things. Although there are plenty of brochures about Florida, I'm always keen to get any personal recommendations from people who have done it themselves. Also, any advice from Florida residents with local knowledge would be really appreciated.

On our last visit to Florida, we did a number of parks in Orlando: Magic Kingdom, MGM (now "hollywood") Studios, Epcot, Universal Studios and Seaworld. We also did the Kennedy Space center and a number of other small attractions in Orlando. After that we went to Fort Lauderdale, explored the waterways and also took a day trip down to Key West but didn't get to spend much time there.

This time we want to do some of the Parks we didn't get to do last time such as Universal Islands of Adventure, Animal Kingdom and Busch Gardens, but were keen to find out what else there is about. We're not worried about a bit of a drive (but Key West might be pushing it). We have a hire car, satnav and my finely honed abilities for driving on the right-hand side of the road due to a brilliant idea I had to drive 1,000 miles to Barcelona last summer :-)

Let me know if there is anywhere you would recommend that we should go and also if there is anywhere you would recommend we avoid. I'm open to all suggestions.

Looking forward to hearing back from People.

Thanks

Re: Where should I go in Florida?

Hmm I know Florida in April is a popular spring break spot. Not sure about Orlando though. You may be overwhelmed by the college girls in their skimpy bikinis (oh darn wink ).
I've only been or Orlando once and I went to the Islands of Adventure. It was pretty decent but all I did was ride the roller coasters. Not sure if it would be geared toward smaller children.
I've always wanted to go to Daytona to see the 500, which was this past Sunday, but even if not to see a race then to see the history behind where it all started. Not sure how popular NASCAR is across the pond, but I spent 10 years growing up in the boonies of North Carolina so it was part of life there smile
Any way you look at it, it's Florida in spring so even if you lay on the beach all day, relax, and turn the redness of a tomato (like I do) then that would still be a good vacation. Enjoy your trip. Make sure and let us know how it went!

I think just about anywhere you go in Florida is going to be beautiful. I was at Key Biscayne 2 months ago with the wife and it was beautiful.

Thanks both for your responses.

I'm prepared for the fact that it may be busy in April, but I'm fixed around my Niece and Nephew's school holidays. I'm hoping it will be quieter closer to the end of our visit as we're out there for 2 weeks starting after Easter Sunday. It's going to be difficult to guage which parks to go to based on age, which is why my Brother-in-law and his kids will probably do their own thing and my wife, son and I will do something else. He's still to young for many of the rides, but with strategic use of the FastPass we should be able to take in turns on the popular rides while doing some of the other (more sedate) stuff together in between.

I watch it now again - there are a number of channels here that carry it, but I don't follow it religiously. I would be interested to go to Daytona though, so thanks for the suggestion.

That's definitely part of the plan (except the turning red bit) cool

If anyone has any other thoughts, in terms of culture, history... and of course eating out, then let me know.
