Re: .

Good moaning all ....
crunching well today, 'underfoot that is', a heavy frost overnight has made the ground hard, talk of snow coming back too!!. Oh well March has always been an unpredictable month, when Jack was a lad there would be six to twelve 'inches' (are we allowed to use that word) of snow sometimes as late as April.

Take care and keep warm ......

Re: .Dens drivel Rant

Morning all smile

Waitng for my census form to drop through the door .
Coments on the Wireless are telling us that we are about to participate in the last one ????
this year you can fill it in on line
How Modern and efficient .
Having just in the last year seen the first forms completed by your Great/grand fathers in their own hand rather than some census enumerator,(1911) The hand writing in general was immaculate and a nice record to see . I can imagine some forms filled in this year the writing will be appalling Because of every one texting or clicking away on the computer that's apart from the reported illiterate state of the population.
The same thing applies to our move to digital photography the image vanished into the machine never to be seen by anyone other than the owner.
Is this important? Yes if like me and one or two others amongst us I am following family trees.
I have shoe boxes containing Old B&W Photos and Negs I can identify people by educated guess work maybe by the house outside which the ancient folks are standing But the important thing is I have the document
If everything is digitally stored all is vertually Lorst ....
Okay mini rant over
have a nice day
And enjoy your Pancakes Its Shrove Tuesday biggrin

....except that I spend an average of about 4 hours per day transcribing into Word, handwritten/typewritten War Diaries and Regimental Histories from First World war up to Second World wars. This means they will not be lost due to the old paper crumbling and they can also be digitally searched so the Family History buffs can find out, maybe, what 'appened to Private Atkins etc.

All this on behalf of the Tank Museum at Bovington for the Royal Armoured Corps regiments..... biggrin

I applaud you for this sterling work as I do for all you others out there that are doing the same with old glass negatives, documents, old recordings, memoirs etc. applause I'm not so sure as to whether the modern method of retrieving population census, digital photo's etc, is the right road to take!, I agree with Den, it's too clinical and cuts out the human element ie handwriting, signatures etc.

On another note, today is also 'International Womens Day' not sure what the differance that makes to women everywhere but there you go!!

Did I????? I didn't knowingly 'do' anything to make that happen?? And what is more, I haven't been able to find my way into 'results' to even see if I am there!! blushing confused love struck

PS: Added to which, I have spent a LOT of time today, trying to find a Virgin Media employee knowledgeable enough, and polite enough, to help me to find a way of getting my TV to work (or rather to even come on!!). sad sad However, this has given me the 'ooomph' (not yet done though) to change my supplier!! devilish Is there something about me that convinces suppliers not to supply to me?? crying crying (Believe me, I am very polite on the 'phone - maybe too polite? confused )
