Evening all
Have a good one John. Never been outside Europe myself so I can't really envy you but I'm sure it'll be great and good to get away from the fag end of this pretty miserable winter here. Having said that, today has been much better than expected with a good deal of sunshine and my supermarket walk was a real pleasure. I even managed to spend a little less than usual which makes it all the more satisfying. Additionally, the store is in the process of a major expansion programme and so has been rather chaotic for the last couple of months. Not a real problem but you do have to have a fresh hunt each week to find the items you want. As a bonus, they keep handing out bonus points so I'm getting close to a free week's shop in hand. |

Johns trip sounds great (understatement)
----------------------------------------Kenya where the Coffee comes from , & judging from my supermarket greengrocery shelves most of the products also are grown there, flying in in a huge cloud of carbon emissions I buy the coffee but try to stick to the local green stuff. difficult debate really the produce keeps the population in employment I can only think the produce is so good cause of the Effylump's must be good stuff ..>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> |

Evening all
Bright day here with the frost disappearing pretty quickly. So I hope your morning walk went well Merle and that your daily exercise now means that the ops on the knees have now shown there true worth. Soon, you'll be jogging instead of walking. This carbon emission is a bit of a problem Den. There seems to be no easy way to make a proper comparison. I agree that buying veg from Kenya etc which is then flown to England seems a problem but then if we are growing similar out of season stuff under these enormous plastic heated cloches, which is worst per kilo of veg? Until there is some sort of international carbon unit scale that is easy to understand it's a real problem, quite apart from what happens to the local economy if countries like Kenya cannot export their products. There seem to be all sorts of labelling problems. I read today a complaint by a reader of my usual paper that in France eggs are sold with the date of origin on them so you know how fresh they are. Here, we have the 'best by' system which, for eggs, is four weeks after they came out of the hen so we have no idea of how fresh they really are. |
