TThrottle+BOINCTasks for BOINC: CPU Auto-Temperature Regulation & Tasks Management

There are tools as for instance SpeedFan, tuning the fan speed to maintain a specific target temperature of a computer. There are tools as e.g. ThreadMaster GUI to smoothly control the CPU resource for each individual science and other application which as side effect has the reduced temperature of the CPU.

Now there is a tool under development for 32 and 64 bit Windows that reduces the cycles a science application is allowed to use, regulated by the temperature of the CPU. Follow and join over there BOINC dev forum http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3517

Concern is as always if the tool does not lead to bad results, but it reads as working better than the BOINC "use at most xx % of CPU time"

Let us know your experience, if you dare to test this.

cheers

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation

So far doing pretty well on the Quad and Laptop duo. Results validate which was the main item to watch. Smooth throttling opposed to BOINC's continuous on and off and a good alternate to tune to e.g. 60% as it only touched BOINC sciences. The 60% e.g. can be achieved by playing with the temp control. Gamers might like it.

Have asked the developer to consider per-science / core. Presently it's all or nothing, with exclusions option, but some sciences, outside WCG, just run much hotter than others which in effect means that a cool task also gets slowed down. If only doing WCG not a concern though.

v 1.48 is out now with a simple and advanced interface.

Edit: The tool has matured to v 1.54 and is able to handle 8 cores and 3 GPU's with separate temp setting for CPU and GPU.

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation

Oh, this looks very interesting. Is there any forseable integration with the bionics manager?

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation

Sek, I just installed TThrottle to test it and it is ... whouaaa, super.

I have been affraid while my PC's were running during summer for four years because it was very hot in my bedrooms at home.
With that program, i am more relax for the next summer that is arriving slowly.

It is so easy to use. Just set the max temp you want and the program do the rest.

Many thanks for the information about TThrottle.

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation

Yes, I'm quite pleased too.

Note to all: Make sure to set the Website Device Profile's Use no more than: 100 % of processor time to 100% else you'll be double throttling!

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation

I will prepare the translation of the manual to put it on France web site normally.
I'll propose Fred the french version of the manual if he is interested to propose it in french.
And why not a french version of the script if he want.
If he does not want, no problem.
It is just that i like to help people that does a lot for the others.

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation

There's a 3rd Party development ongoing, see http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/ , by the same person posting as Fred that build TThrottle called BoincTasks. Been running it for a while, but the latest Beta 0.30 really ices the cake because it is now also showing on a per active task basis what the temps of the cores are and how much % throttle is applied to keep the specified temperature (if you like to)... i.e. it collaborates with TThrottle.

Here thumbnail image with link to oversized screen-shot. The top half show the completed task history, when finished and when uploaded, the bottom half displaying the active tasks, which client is running it, and a condensed list of tasks that still have to run. An outstanding part being the ability to look at a single remote client or all in one.

Full size image link

Link to manual and download page: http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/boinc_tasks/manual.html

A great replacement to BOINCview, and very actively developed at that. Extreme low CPU time use. The 64 bit version now up about 36 hours and 20 seconds shown as used in TaskManager.

My personal Thumbs Up

f.a.o. boulmontjj, I see a French translation being listed on the efMer forums under the TThrottle section :D

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation

And discovering another great feature in the BoincTasks tool. The Completed tasks history shows both the CPU and Elapsed time giving a hint at the client's efficiency and share of total available time. ALSO, this tool has opposed to BOINC Manager a multi column sort so you can sort tasks for instance first on Client, Then Projects, Then Deadline, Then Progress. Simply hold the ctrl key while selecting the column headers you want secondary sort on after first doing the primary.

Goodoos to Fred from Olland for building this and put it out for free.

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation

BoincTasks (and TThrottle) are ever evolving with some great additions, the former now retaining up to 365 days of task history and how they ended up being transmitted. The kit now automatically sensing if you've got a 32 or 64 bit OS: Latest release history and get it here:

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation

In winter time, put a desktop in each room, and use TThrottle to regulate the room temperature. So you have heating and as a byproduct you contribute to WCG. When temps are too cold then overclock. wink
