Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation & Tasks Management

Yes, that was a point we were discussing, he made the highlighting into 2x WDS from before only after 1 hour. For me that means any checkpoint (CP) taking longer than 10 minutes turns red. He's going to add some features to the config.xml so you can determine when you like it to highlight, maybe even at app level drooling

It's most certainly getting it right for CEP2... saw [15] 08:30:51 and the CP field turned red and 1:30 hours on the counter so knew it was on it's way to finishing. The progress % is still tuned to taking it as a fraction of 12 hours cap so it's of no value (hope armstrdj will fix this by the time we get to the Windows release) :D

Re: Automatic Temperature Regulation & Tasks Management

An "at bottom UP bump", some interesting feature added to TThrottle in latest version 3.3
# Changed: Throttling is now using a random scattering pattern, to avoid simultaneous throttling of all cores.

This means in effect, that now jobs are being slowed at different times on different cores to get a more stable overall CPU load reduction to keep the temperatures in check. Ideal for Windows laptops.

Throttle for BOINC: Automatic Temperature Regulation & Tasks Management

The latest versions have interesting changes, such as individual GPU card control. From the change log:

3.60 May 2011
New: Independent temperature regulator for each GPU.
New: When a CPU signature changes a message box will be shown with a warning. At the same time the number of temperature sensors is checked.
New: An option in Preferences, to allowing opening the dialog, as administrator only.
Changed: Every GPU now has it's own regulator thread, with a randomized offset.
Changed: Minimum CPU and GPU regulator 2->1%.
Fixed: In BOINC connection mode, TThrottle didn't always reconnect when a connection was lost. (Due to a restart of the BOINC client).
Fixed: Graphs, draw the horizontal and vertical text last, to avoid them to be overdrawn by other items.

4.10 May 2011
Changed: Vista and up: The throttling regulator is now in the driver. This should eliminated all access problems for throttling.
Fixed: Double temperature numbers and sometimes the wrong color in the graphs.
Fixed: When the font is set to more than 100% the program list box is smaller than normal.
Fixed: (Intel) A read to the CPU to determine the TJunction temperature, caused the driver to crash on older cpu's. Now only Family 0x6, Model: 0x1A, 0x1E, 0x1F, 0x25, 0x2C, 0x2E, 0x2A, 0x2D perform a read. If you know any others that are missing, please let me know.

Latter is a major version number revision. Get it here: http://www.efmer.eu/boinc/download.html

Still a gem specially written to control CPU temps as raised by BOINC, particularly on laptops/notebooks... still superior to the way BOINC standard throttling works [on/off alternation]. Regrettably for Windows only.

Re: Throttle for BOINC: Automatic Temperature Regulation & Tasks Management

A great addition just discovered in BOINCTasks 1.34 is the CPU% efficiency column in the Result History. Now no more watching and able to discern later if the system was crunching in optima forma... it was \o/.
1.34 June 2012

New: Message tab: Sorting on the Nr column.
New: History CPU % column.
Fixed: When the message tab was selected, the CPU load was too high.
Fixed: BoincTasks mobile: When the message tab was selected, the CPU load was too high.
Fixed: BoincTasks mobile: Problems logging in and repeated refreshes.
Fixed: Project properties: The backoff times where incorrect on a V6 client.

Re: Throttle for BOINC: Automatic Temperature Regulation & Tasks Management

BOINCTasks has reached version 1.42 [automatically instal in either 32 or 64 bits, whatever the OS is].

A tip for those who like to sort their stuff more advanced than can be done in the BOINC Manager.

1) Set the deadline column to show remaining time.
2) Hit the Elapsed time column multiple times till a leading ^appears in the header. This sorts the running/pre-empted results by how long they have run.
3) Hold the Ctrl key and with mouse select the deadline column multiple times so that a leading ^2 appears in the column header.

Now you've got a view that has the tasks with the shortest deadline listed right after the running tasks. The micro managers can then decide to push these manually ahead [the old suspend "All Ready to Start", minus the ones you want to push ahead, then suspend the running tasks you wish to be passed by the short-deadline tasks.

(And No, BOINC will never get a permanent Earliest Deadline First option... it could lead to permanent panic depending on the size of the buffer and could result in one project being favored over the other, to name but a few problems. BOINC is not build for micro managers, it's designed for set and forget, I nauseatingly repeat ;-)

Re: Throttle for BOINC: Automatic Temperature Regulation & Tasks Management

Latest TThrolle version may interest the GPU tweakers [lag suffering, but crunch no matter what, else blame the programmers, who gave it their best and not seeking your personal approval ;P
6.30 October 2012
New: Threat as in use, when specific programs are running. Makes it possible to throttle differently when a program is running.

Re: Throttle for BOINC: Automatic Temperature Regulation & Tasks Management

Rumpetybump, Fred upgraded his TThrottle to V7, just as the WCG version will soon be, well soon is a very stretchable 'axiom' at WCG, therefor never used :) Update info to TThrottle: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3517&postid=49497#49497
