Also, I don't think anyone explicitly answered the question yet. Will there be a PPC app for CEP? Earlier in the thread, Sekerob said "Be prepared for PPC not to get support", but what is the official plan? If Sekerob suggests that PPC will not be supported, you can be certain he has checked the current plan before making that kind of statement. Doesn't mean that the plan can't change, but this one looks pretty unlikely given current technology. Given all the projects that WCG wants to do, very unlikely this one would be moved high enough to get under development. |

IMO, by disregarding PPC, IBM has excluded it's own Power Systems line of processors. Seems like a tremendous waste of compute resources especially considering who's hosting this whole thing..

I have a "family" of Macintoshes I've used over the years to crunch for different distributed computing projects (SETI, folding@home, rosetta@home). While a small percentage of the machines are currently PPC machines, they are still and will always be family.
I recently left rosetta@home because some members of my family (the PPC machines) were no longer good enough for them and came to WGC because WGC welcomed the entire family. I find the argument that "the percentages are too small to be of value" used to justify dropping a line of technology seems counter to the entire purpose of many of the projects here. What is the percentage of humans with AIDS? Subject to dengue fever? Or have cancer? I like BOINC because it runs on so many types of computers. Too bad so many projects can't follow that kind of example. |

aginghippie, it's money and resource, that simple. Both are limited.
----------------------------------------Anyway, the just about to start new project has been readied for OS-X PPC. For CEP, not even sure they could handle it. HPF2 at least was never made fit for the OSX-PPC platform. ACAH was even pulled off MAC altogether. Too few participants, causing quorums to never get together in time holding up the whole project.

I solved my PPC mac problems. Bought a new MacBook and offset the cost by selling my 2 PPC Mac's. Problem solved.
