I've cleaned the PC, fans and heatsink thoroughly and the current temperature readings are now:
Idle temperature=58 degrees centigrade, system temperature 29/30 deg cent. This is the same as a friend of mine who has a brand new PC with the same chip (P4 3.0) Temperature when running grid= 79/80 degrees centigrade, system temperature 30/31 deg cent. I still think the chip temperature is too high. I'm waiting delivery of a new super duper heatsink and fan and will see if this makes a difference Meanwhile, maybe the folks at the grid could consider different running options (eg ten minutes in any hour) Jim |

I forgot to say that I also checked the temperature when running the virus checker - this came out as 64 degress centigrade for the chip, with no change in the system temperature

jmcmanus,
Look over ThreadMaster at http://bednorz.uni2.net/anyland/threadmaster/threadmaster.htm while you are waiting for your heatsink. This is just to get you by while you are waiting for a true cure. ThreadMaster is a nice program, but anytime it is really needed, as in your case, there is a hardware problem that needs fixing. So I am unfairly biased against it. Hope this helps. Get well soon. Some of the Intel chips are notorious for running hot at idle speeds. I have a 3.4 Prescott chip and it runs like a furnace. Prescotts are known for running hot as they run at and over 100 watts. If your chip is a Prescott then it will run hot. As for idling at 80C there is definately something wrong. With the stock heatsink on mine and running the folding program I was up around 80C. They say that the Prescotts can run up into the 90C's with no problem I didn't like it being that high in the first place. I water cooled mine to get the temps down more.
Hopefully your new heatsink will work for you. I would also suggest using Artic Silver thermal compound. It definately helps lower temperatures alot as it facilitates the heat transfer to the heat sink. |

I picked up an idea from some OCers when I was trying to learn some things. (I am a novice!) I pulled the service side of my computer case off and lost 18C under full load.
While talking to a good friend with 2900 dual processors whose cpu was being automatically throttled down by his mobo to 62C while running WGC, I found out that he had started running Threadmaster at 20%. So we tried it on his box. He shut down Threadmaster, and pulled the service side panel down. Within 10 minutes his temp went down to 53C and no more throttling. Who knows what his temp would have been if the cpu hadn't automatically been throttled down? (Btw, when either of us took the other side of the box off as well, the temperature started going UP due to the disruption in the designed air flow inside of the box.) I have heard that the manufacturers claim that if you pull even the service side down it will have a bad effect on the airflow. But, when enough of these OCers said they did it, I figured it was worth a shot. And it sure was! Of course, my box is in a nook; safely inaccessible by people, children, pets, liquids and ambient air flow. ![]() |

Thanks for the temp info. I have 2 prescotts running at 3.2 and 3.4 ghz.
They are also running 24/7. I to went to watercooling for these two proccessor with the heat they poor off I felt it was well worth the expense. Now I am running under grid loads temps in the 26C for the proccesors themelves. I wont buy into anymore prescotts though. Just tom any problems surrounding them. |

All,
Recently I checked my CPU-temp ( P4-HT 3.0 ) and found out it has been climbedt to 66 C, not alarming but still a bit high so time to dust I thought. I vacumed the hole PC and restarted and after some time the CPU temp rose to 62 C.... I was not amused... so this morning I bought a big Zalman CPU cooler. Lost some crunching time because I had to take the hole machine appart but... it was worth the work and investment because the temperature did not exeeded the 49 C so far after 10hrs crunching.I hope I can keep crunching thue the summer now I have no Airco here. ![]() |

Ilost one comp. a few weeks ago due to that. Where i live you need Aircond. It gets very hot and humid I use MBM Moniter ![]() |

Gerald,
In that case ... see this link I do know if it is available in the US and certainly worth the investment ( about 40 euro ). I am running more that 24hrs now and it never rose above 49 C ... in fact when the client is preparing the WU to return the temperature drops to 44 C !!!! Your comrad in battle |

Don't worry about ur P4 over heating, heck u can take the heat sink off and it most likely wont kill it... completely anyway. P4s are designed to 'slow down' when things get to hot. so if it gets really hot in there it'll slow itself down to control the temprature.
mine runs at a cool 27C, i got a whole 1kg of solid copper on mine. |
