PG&E News Release - Increased Electricity Costs Soon it will be too expensive to crunch. Notice they only quoted the increase in Tier 1 usage (typical of them). I'm in tier 4 (currently 39 cents/kw hour). ![]() I hit into Tier 3 a bit. :S... I wish I can cut down to the limit of Tier 2. ![]() |

What are the different milestones that Keith posts every day? I see just a few every day, most days have none.. :( Dr. Mike.. ![]() Well, the summertime (up here north of the equator) tends to be a bit quieter and slower for us. We've often had times when no milestones on a day was unusual as well. Originally, the team recognized points milestones. That's been expanded to include recognition of run time and results as well. Some see one type as more important and other another. They are all important. We also have a large variety of cunchers. We have those with multiple high-end multi-core boxes that run 24x7x365 who generate the larger numbers. At the other end of the spectrum are those who crunch for example only during the work day when their machine is idle. Each person does what is best for them. All are equally important and all contribute to the goals here at the WCG. The milestones are also more than a way of recognizing one's contribution. It's a way for the team to provide encouragement as well. You'll find that our milestones don't have a fixed increment. That actually changes, more than once in fact. The intent is to provide everyone with regular recognition and encouragement. Run time is simply the number of full years of CPU run time. For results returned, the milestones are set at these levels: 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2400, 2500, 2600, 2700, 2800, 2900, 3000, 3100, 3200, 3300, 3400, 3500, 3600, 3700, 3800, 3900, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7000, 7500, 8000, 8500, 9000, 9500, 10000, 11000, 12000, 13000, 14000, 15000, 16000, 17000, 18000, 19000, 20000, 25000, 30000, 35000, 40000, 45000, 50000, 55000, 60000, 65000, 70000, 75000, 80000, 85000, 90000, 95000, 100000, 125000, 150000, 175000, 200000. As you can see, we start with an increment of 100, then 500, 1000, 5000 and 25000. Points milestones are at 25000, 50000, 75000, 100000, 200000, 250000, 300000, 400000, 500000, 600000, 700000, 750000, 800000, 900000, 1000000, 1500000, 2000000, 2500000, 3000000, 3500000, 4000000, 4500000, 5000000, 5500000, 6000000, 6500000, 7000000, 7500000, 8000000, 8500000, 9000000, 9500000, 10000000, 10500000, 11000000, 11500000, 12000000, 12500000, 13000000, 13500000, 14000000, 14500000, 15000000, 15500000, 16000000, 16500000, 17000000, 17500000, 18000000, 18500000, 19000000, 19500000, 20000000, 21000000, 22000000, 23000000, 24000000, 25000000, 26000000, 27000000, 28000000, 29000000, 30000000, 31000000, 32000000, 33000000, 34000000, 35000000. A cruncher with multiple high-end machines normally will move rapidly thru the initial milestone levels and settle into the ranges with the larger increments. The single-machine, part-time cruncher will move a bit more slowly thru the levels but the smaller initial increments allows us to give them recognition and encouragement hopefully as regularly timewise as our high-enders. For me, that's a reflection of our belief that everyone's contribution matters and is equally important. |
