What kinds of machines does everyone else run? I looked at a wireless router for my cable modem today. Boy, did I get confused. :( So many brands and types. 1) not sure which one is right 2) wouldn't know how to work it in the first place.. HELP! lol.. Dr. Mike.. ![]() My Farm: 6 Q6600 quads, 1 6400 duo, 4 P4 duos, 2 P4 singles (36 cores). Currently Crunchin’: 4 quads and the 6400 (as it has my weather station on it). I can’t help on what wireless modem is best ... I’m hardwired. I think Keith uses a wireless modem. Too expensive for me to get a wireless modem that handles that many PC’s. Beside, my office would not look like my office without 12 tons of copper behind the racks. They are easy to set up. An Ethernet cable from your cable modem to the router and a transmitter/receiver plugged into the ethernet port of each machine. Keith will know the details. ![]() I got a Q6600 and an overclocked E6600 at 3.4 GHz. Q6600 is dedicated. E6600 is my normal computer; I run WCG when I can. And for the wireless modem thing.. Don't get a wireless modem. Just have: Phone line -> Modem -> Wireless Router -> Computer/Laptops It'll run you only $40. :) Edit: Take a look at some of the top seller ones here. A bit more expensive than I thought.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp...ers&SpeTabStoreType=0 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190 ^ Seems good --------- Also guys. My AIDS Walk is on Sunday at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. If anyone in MOT hasn't donated yet, I would appreciate putting a few dollars in. (Minimum by credit card is $25.. but email me at vincent@blizzie.com and I'll throw money in until I receive your check, etc) https://www.kintera.org/faf/search/searchTeam...amp;team=2824683&cj=Y Thanks guys. :) Crunch on.. ---------------------------------------- Good job!!! You back to 100% health yet? @ Dave: You get that scooter yet? If so send pic’s. How’s Cedric? ... Zelda sends her love. @ Jonathan: Buy your girlfriend a better machine. Anyone at Harvard can afford to buy their GF a better machine. How’s the Audi? Boy, did I get confused. :( So many brands and types. 1) not sure which one is right 2) wouldn't know how to work it in the first place.. HELP! lol.. Dr. Mike.. ![]() Yea, they're like a commodity item that everyone churns out. I've found that you'll find folks that think one brand is great and other that will tell you they had nothing but trouble with that brand. Stick with the majors. I have had store sales staff tell me LinkSys has problems and several folks who've bought them say they had problems too. One store staff warned that they saw problems with Linksys and recommended NetGear. That one lasted maybe a year and died. Friend at work had an extra one - a D-Link - that they gave me. It was easy to set up even with encryption (which you want on wireless connections). It's run fine and seems to be holding up well - it's always on. Only negative is that any momentary blip in power (the same kind that gets all your toys blinking 12:00) will mean "rebooting" it. I disconnect the power for about a minute or so and then reconnect. I suspect this will be a problem on any brand though. If you have a backup power supply for your machine (so you can do a nice shutdown), you might could run power thru that and avoid this problem. It's not anywhere near major - just an annoyance when a thunderstorm comes thru. Most wireless routers will be 802.11g though they probably have plenty of 802.11n now. 802.11 is the wireless communications standard. There's 802.11a, b, g and n (the newest). Basically, the difference in a, b, g and n is speed and range. N's may still cost a bit more than the G's simply because they're the newest. You want to keep in mind hat wireless capability your machine has. If yours is 802.11a|b|g, getting an N may mean that you'll spend a few extra bucks for some extra speed you won't use. If' you're looking at getting new machine in the forseeable future, it may be a good idea to go ahead then. I don't think the price difference was that great. Another area where I think you might see some variation is how many machines can run off the one router. I think most allow four ethernet wired connections and four wireless connections. Some allow more wireless connections. Most likely, you don't need anything fancy, just a nice basic simple wireless router. My D-Link DI-524 has been fine for me. I connect both my laptops off it and have a good signal anywhere in the house. I liked the ease to set up and their "app" for that seemed sensibly organized. |

I'm not liking it... I got a new one for college though. :) |

@ Dave: You get that scooter yet? If so send pic’s. How’s Cedric? ... Zelda sends her love. I haven't heard from them yet about the scooter, but I expect to sometime soon. They told me it would be about six weeks, and I'm not sure, but I think it has been about five now. The one I am getting is this model in blue. Cedric is doing well (probably over on his charger blushing about Zelda). I still cannot believe how effective they are. I've been thinking of finding a way for my camcorder to take a ride on Cedric just for laughs. Would have loved it if you had done that when Zelda followed you out the door to try to vacuum up the leaves from your deck. That would have been an instant hit on YouTube! |

Dr. Mike.. ![]() Hi Dr. Mike -- I am running a Dell E1505 desktop with a Core2 Dual processor at 2.13 GHz as well as a Dell laptop (not sure of model) also running a Core2 Dual at (I think) 1.87 GHz. My router is an old (about 6 years old) Linksys BEFW11S4 802.11b wireless router with 4 ethernet ports. I have my desktop and printer hard wired to it and run my laptop wireless from it. If you want to learn about networking your systems, Linksys has a learning center on it's website that even has some video classes which might be of help to you. |

Kewel ... hope it arrives soon. Yep, unlike "deep throat" Zelda cannot swallow a Blue Oak acorn. Perhaps we could breed them and produce nanobots. Yes, they are very good at sweeping but the side brush does not last long for me.The deck sweep was funny. There are a few moments of my life I wish I had on film ... and 10 to the 23rd power moments that I am glad are not!!!! Be well Dave. ![]() ![]() |
